Today’s trip into madness is Rest Stop. It was written and directed by John Shiban, receiving no awards for his efforts. It carries an R rating for violence, gore, language, and sexuality. Sounds like a perfect recipe for schlock to me, and schlock it is.
Nicole & Jess, young acting wanna-bes leave the nest stealthily on their way to LA. Naturally they are full of young lust and horny daydreams and they decide to act on that along side of an old road. Caught with everything off except their smiles by some voyeuristic nimrod in a pickup truck, the couple scurry on their way. Ain’t but a minute and little Nicole needs to use the facilities. Jess offers to stop along the road but she is miffed at that suggestion. And what if there are snakes?
Fortunately for them, they quickly find a rest stop in a deserted part of the highway. She don’t mind going in this bathroom. One look inside and the first thing I’m thinking is ‘Girlfriend, you’d be better off having a snake bite your woo than putting your prim bottom on one of those seats. Have you looked at this place?’ But, hey, I wasn’t there.
Despite the fact this place looks like the inside of a frat house bathroom after a week long party, Nicole goes about her business. While nestled on this filthy throne, a pair of work boots appear at the base of her stall door and she sees an eye peeking in, then hears someone sniffing at the door. OK, right then and there I’m done but after yelling at the guy she goes about her duties. She’s got a better kidney than I do, I’ll tell ya that. On exiting the bathroom - uh oh - Jess is gone. Kaput! No car, no Jess.
She goes to the ranger station on site, deserted. She goes to a huge camper on site, deserted. What’s a gal to do? Oh … there’s a phone; line cut. However, next to the phone booth is a large display of ‘missing’ posters, which she takes the time to look through. Then the same old pick up truck shows up and she gets scared. Now she’s scared?
She breaks into the ranger station but all she finds is a bottle of Wild Turkey, which she quickly takes as part of her stash. Then she sees a radio and attempts to reach someone beyond this little hovel of Hell. Finally, after about half a bottle, someone answers her call and says he will contact authorities. We’ve all been here before friends. You know, and I know, the voice on the other end of the radio is the psycho in the pick up truck. Just how small was the town Nicole ran away from anyway?
As the story progresses we are treated to just about every imaginable form of torture there is available, along with some new spins. It’s a fairly gory production, when you can get Nicole away from the bottle, with blood and crazy people everywhere. I won’t even discuss the group in the abandoned camper. It’s is kind of like Jeepers Creepers meets Saw. Without the good script and acting. To top it off, anything that might have built up during the show was stripped away with the lousy ending.

REST STOP I had high hopes for this film going into it when I first watched it, it was being compared to "WOLF CREEK" [a film I liked] so I thought that this would be just as good if not better. How could you fill 90 minutes of video about a rest stop? Well they have. The acting in this movie is almost as bad as the acting in Blood Rayne (2005); I still can't believe how bad the acting was/is/always will be. Jaimie Alexander (Nicole) must have paid someone off to land her role in this film as her acting talent is terrible, at least in this movie. I can see that Jaimie tried her hardest in the film as she and her boyfriend decide to run away to the bright lights and the big city. As you … more

Considering thatRest Stopcomes courtesy director John Shiban, anX-FilesandStar Trekstaff writer, one would expect this horror film to contain a kernel of originality, but unfortunately it is a poor conflation ofWolf Creek,Joyride, andTexas Chainsaw Massacre, among others. Nicole Carrow (Jaimie Alexander) and Jess Hilts (Joey Mendocino) are young, hopeful actors taking a road trip to Hollywood, though neither reaches their final destination. A psychotic pick-up truck driver dominates the rest stop they pull off at, often maiming his victims by hitting them with his truck, then dragging them off onto a school bus where he tortures them with drills, pincers, saws, branding irons, knives, and other tools. Jess disappears early in the film, leaving Nicole to fend for herself, often by locking herself in the dingy rest stop restroom, or by running to avoid being hit by the truck. After her attempt to call a sheriff ends in the sheriff's death, Nicole's prospects for survival dim. Graphic scenes are indeed horribly disgusting, but the torture methods are so clichéd that one wishes for more psychology behind the killer's methods to actually scare. A random scene in which Nicole hitches a ride in a motorhome with some Bible-thumping freaks further pushes the film into clichéd territory.
