It's really hard to guage Star Wars fans sometimes. Some fans are diehards and will love ANYTHING that comes out the pipe like Attack of the Clones or the Special Editions. Some are so tempermental that they get a bug up their behind about ANYTHING even from Empire Strikes Back. One thing is certain though and thats universally Return of the Jedi is seen as the bottom of the original three films. Even seeing it as a teen while on a Star Wars high I came away feeling strange. It wasn't BAD but I knew something was a miss. The one film that could have used a polish from the Special Editions and it ended up looking even worse afterward.
The story first off is partially rehashed with another Death Star and the movie feels really disjointed with a good third of the story taken up by a rescue mission for Han Solo from Jabba The Hutt and then after another visit to Yoda we finally get onto the real story involving the new Death Star construction and the Rebel's attempt to destroy it. In between all that theres plenty of exposition and annoying little teddy bears killing armored soldiers and action scenes that don't soar the way they used to. Couldn't some Jabba material be trimmed a few seconds here and there in the Special Edition? How about cutting down Leia's encounter with Wicket or C-3P0s reenactment of the first two movies to the Ewoks? Who needs any of that?
People like to whine about Lucas selling out for Ewoks being marketable. Put that in perspective. Luca's replaced Ewoks with Wookies on the Forest moon. A planet with Wookies everyone knows would have been far cooler and if you really want to chock it up to marketing and selling products, what is more appealing, the big strong Wookie or the stupid teddy bear?
Another whine is the acting, particularily at Carrie Fisher who had Tony Montana's cocaine mountain waiting for her off camera. Listen fans Star Wars was NEVER known for it's acting, even before the prequels.
The musical scene in Jabba's Palace before the Special Edition was quaint and cute but again people whine about Muppets. Really? The guys in Halloween masks in Star Wars were okay but full on Muppets (that don't even look like Muppets) are lame? There is no pleasing fans sometimes. Definetely not after they added a CGI critter in the special edition and had the aliens playing a new song with an awful singing alien juxtaposed badly with old scenes of Oola fighting with Jabba.
Well lets get to some good stuff. I'm a sucker for seeing new spaceships and this movie has plenty of them. New fighters, transports, battleships. It's a shame we don't see more of them. Lucas allegedally had trouble with the B Wing model and had to limit it's use because of photography issues but not one single new shot of the model (or any other for that matter) was used in the Special Edition, it's the same old thing. Comic books cover a group of these fighters dropping fire on a Star Destroyer until it explodes, THAT would have been cool to see! Wheres that?
By far the best part of the movie is the Emporer. Ian McDiarmid rocks in a real minimalist role that he hits home with each time. Pure evil concentrated this man is. More of his footage would have been good.
Seriously folks, if you get so wrapped up in this movie that it drives you to write a top 50 list like I saw not too long ago, then you are emotionally arrested. Seriously, it's a movie and not a bad one at that but it gets the unfavorable comparison to the films before it. Yes it's a movie series that means a lot to some people and they're childhood and some live the life as close as they can but in the end of the day, just because one movie of three was a bit of a misfire is no reason to run up a psychiatrist bill. Yes this coming from a guy who wrote a review (screw it an ESSAY) on why I can't stand Attack of the Clones. The movie is still better then most out there, I think we can all agree on that. Think of it this way, it started the theme of third movies in popular series that have been less then stellar? X Men, Spiderman, The Godfather, Superman. See? Return of the Jedi IS a trendsetter!!

You are right...it would have been much better with Wookies instead of Ewoks.

Return of the Jedi originally came out in 1983, and marks the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. At the time of its release it was critically acclaimed and well accepted. At least more so than The Empire Strikes Back when it first came. Nowadays it is often considered the weakest of the original trilogy. Uneven and dul in a few spots maybe, The third Star Wars movie is still a step above many of it's peers.

About this movie
The third and final chapter in the wondrous STAR WARS saga is RETURN OF THE JEDI. Luke (Mark Hamill) must save Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from the clutches of the monstrous Jabba the Hut, and bring down the newly reconstructed--and even more powerful--Death Star. With Solo imprisoned, Luke accompanies his faithful droids R2D2 (Kenny Baker) and C3PO (Anthony Daniels) in a rescue bid, with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) also lending a hand. After they valiantly disentangle their friends from Jabba's clutches, Luke returns to his Jedi Knight training with Yoda. Meanwhile, the Rebel Troops amass in an attempt to see off the impending threat from Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones) and his new Death Star, with the operation being lead by Han Solo.
