'The Amazing Spider-Man' Is Not That Amazing But It's Really Good - According To One Jew On Film

'The Amazing Spider Man, shot in 3D and directed by Mark Webb (500 Days Of Summer) is an edgy, emotional, action pack, at times, boring, movie.  Yes I did use the 'b' word.

In this version, which is definitely in my opinion, an improvement over all the 'Spider Man films that came before, we meet Peter Parker (Max Charles) as a young boy.

His father, (Campbell Scott) a renowned scientist and  mother, fearing that they're in danger, leave their young son in the care of  his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and  Aunt May (Sally Fields).

We flash forward years later...Peter Peter (Andrew Garfield) is now a skateboarder/science nerd/photographer filled witha bucket load of teen angst

Parker is an outcast in school, constantly getting picked on by the jocks. His only friend, is the gorgeous Gwen (Emma Stone) so things could be worse.

But Peter's life is about to change, when....

He finds one of his dad's old research papers.  This sends him to the lab of his father's former partner, scientist  Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) who for years, has been obsessed with finding a way to regrow limbs.  Can't really blame him, since he only has one and a half arms.

At the lab, Peter gets bitten by a genetically altered spider and well...the rest is history.

Watching Peter getting use to his powers is actually one of the more entertaining aspects of the film...That is, until he meets his nemesis...Not wanting to spoil anything, I'll just call him...A VERY BIG ANGRY GREEN LIZARD MAN...

Unfortunately, the action doesn't come until the last 40 minutes of the film and watching Peter's awkardness with Gwen, becomes grating after a while.

But having said that, if you are a fan of this genre, 'The Amazing Spider Man' is definitely a 'must see' for you.

The special effects are great and I liked Andrew Garfield quite a lot as the high flying/jumping/crime fighting/flawed super hero.

It's for that reason I gave 'The Amazing Spider Man' which opens in theatres, Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012, 4 bagels out of 5.

I am avoiding all reviews for this film until I see it. I am a Spidey nut and I heard several things about this movie that I hope are not true. Be back to comment more after I've seen it.

You felt the way John felt. Hopefully 'Batman' will be better. Happy 4th.

Thanks you are the first reviewer that calls this an improvement over the prior films. Was it because of the 3D? I find it hard for this film to be better than #2 with Doc Octopus.

Andrew Garfield is a much better actor than Mr. McGuire

Sam Raimi’s first Spider-man film was a good launch for Spidey. It had major references to the Ultimate and 616 versions of the character that made it work. Sure, it was a little campy but it was heaven for Spidey comic fans since it captured the essence of its characters from Aunt May to J.Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane and Peter Parker. They weren’t perfect but they were good, fun and entertaining. However, Raimi’s franchise took a major downturn with the release of its abysmal …

When I first knew that this franchise was being rebooted, I asked myself why? Then knowing that The Lizard would be the villian, I thought that this move would be worse than the last mishmash that was Spiderman 3. The why was quickly answered from the first scene. We see a young Peter Parker with his parents, first playing hide and seek with his Dad, then later being brought to live with his Aunt and Uncle when something seems to have gone wrong with his father.    Peter never …

Spiderman and Crane Operators to the rescue!
Let me get this out of my system right now:      I don't know why this movie series was rebooted.      I put up with X Men First Class's reboot only because that movie ended up being so good.  This one not so much.      And-WHY was this movie series rebooted?  Did Tobey Maguire just not want to do another one or was Spierman 3 just SO unredeemable that they had to restart?  I'll also say this right now:  …

When the original Spider Man trilogy came out ten years ago in 2002 it paved the way forward for just about every comic book movie.  It was the movie that really popularized the trend of doing so.  This is why for the past ten years no summer has ever lamented a major Super Hero movie.  Because Spider Man came, saw and conquered.  It was a hit with the critics and a hit at the box office (until The Dark Knight it was the king of Super Hero movies in terms of Box Office, a feat …

Initially when a franchise reboots a series not five years from its last installment this can often be seen as assigned they've run out of ideas.  It was reported inability to find a suitable script that drove director-producer Sam Raimi and the stars of the Spider-man series away from a possible fourth outing and forced Sony/Columbia start fresh. Selecting upon relatively new Marc Webb who outside of "500 Days of Summer", had worked on music videos and most recently directed …

Marc Webb's retake on the story of Spider-Man has probably one big flaw in the whole scheme of things. The fact that it got released probably too soon and most definitely at a moment full of so much hype for the other blockbuster contenders. We all remember Sam Raimi's nostalgic trilogy where it all began surprisingly good, followed up by one of the best comic-book movies ever made, and ending up with one of the best comedies ever made purely by mistake. Marc Webb wanted to …

It's all about relationships
What is amazing is not Spider-Man but that every generation of kids and young adults need to watch these superheros with their own version of superheros. Hence, even after the last Tobey Maguire version some 10 years ago (which I thought was unbeatable), we need a new update for the current movie goers.      My friend decided not to watch it when I asked her to go. Her reason? It's not the same guy! She'd rather stick to her memory of the last Spider-Man, it seems. Well, …

If anyone knows me, they know that I hate reboots. So when I say that I really enjoyed this movie don't take it lightly, but before I get into that lets get the boring stuff out of the way. Back in mid 2011 I heard about the new Spiderman Reboot, as you might guess I was immediately critical of if. I felt that it was too soon to make a reboot to Spiderman and that it was just going the tell the same story over again.  After watching the second …

It is impossible to not compare The Amazing Spider-Man to Spider-Man which has a 10 year difference in release date.  It is a bit frustrating watching the entire origin story retold when most of America already knows what occurred.  But here we are re hashing an old story.  But to the credit of the movie's stars, director, and creative team they are able to create an interesting and engaging story.  The Amazing Spider-Man is a solid summer blockbuster that has enough …

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Written by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves Directed by Marc Webb Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and Denis Leary   Spider-Man: Hey! Watch it! I’m swingin’ here! I’m swingin’ here!   My guess is that calling the new Spider-Man reboot, “The Occasionally Amazing but Mostly Just OK and Reasonably Redundant Spider-Man” might not have been a slam dunk, marketing wise,  so I get why they …
