"The Princess and The Frog" was definitely more than just another movie for Disney. Disney hasn't had a successful traditional animated theatrical movie since "Lilo & Stitch" and hasn't made a theatrical princess movie since the 1990's. It was supposed to be a turning point for traditional animation at Disney. I personally would say it was mildly successful. It placed #47 in Box Office Sales of an Animated Movie, not the scratching the surface of what Pixar movies make but coming below "Lilo & Stitch" by 2 places.
The movie itself was very entertaining, moving, and delightful but honestly, would not rank in my Disney favorites. Tiana, Prince Naveen, Louis the alligator, and Ray the firefly were all adorable and wonderful characters. There were some hilarious moments in the film that my husband and I still laugh about! (Mostly Louis moments! He has to be my fav character!) The overall themes of the movie are that you need to work hard to make your dreams come true and not to lose sight of what is important. I like that the movie taught you a lesson and wasn't just a romantic fairy tale. I also appreciate that they didn't make Charlotte, Tiana's rich friend, into a cold-hearted woman, as many movies like to portray rich people negatively.
While the music was lively and fun, it was also unmemorable. I can't recall a single song or verse from the entire movie as I write this and that is truly unfortunate for a Disney movie. The part of the movie that I disliked the most was how quickly it moved through death of one of Tiana's friends into a wedding scene! I was still crying my eyes out over the tragedy and I was supposed to be suddenly happy about a wedding. This transition was very painful for me.
The Shadow Man was also a very predictable villain. It would be nice once and awhile for Disney to not make their villains so obvious. Disney villains always LOOK like villains. They should take a cue from Pixar in this regard. In "Up", it was a surprise who the villain actually was!
Lastly, the movie title is not true to the story since Tiana was not a princess. "The Frog Prince" would make the most sense but I'm sure Disney wanted to get the word "princess" in there so even "The Frog Princess" would have been better.
All in all, though not one of Disney's bests, it was the best traditional animated film in awhile and is definitely worth watching!

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG is a very loose adaptation of the classic fairy tale, THE FROG PRINCE. Disney took the story of the prince who has been turned into a frog and can only be saved by a kiss, and launched a story all its own. I saw The Princess and the Frog today after many months (maybe years) of anticipation. Maybe it was because there was FINALLY a new Disney Princess...maybe it was because it was an actual 2D animated film being released in theaters...who knows but I was excited. A vapid story of a bunch of self-obsessed and materialistic characters. Now, some people have commented that the story is also racist because many of the characters are mere caricatures of black people. Disney's newest animated film, Princess and the Frog, was advertised for months. Hype for this movie has been huge and that is largely because it is the return to hand drawn animation, something that has been gone from the Disney Company for years. After watching this movie, I've finally come to understand Disney's movie strategy every year. Basically, every year Pixar releases a movie with either all of the lead roles being male, or half of the lead roles being male. The same year, Disney's traditional cartoon will have a female lead, or a male-female shared lead. So for 2009, Pixar's release was Up, starring all male leads. All I can say is this: It's about time! Once again the 2D animation department at Disney has completed a theatrical release. Now, I may not be young, and I may not have children of my own, but I know as a fact that everyone can likely attest to how important Disney's animated musicals were to their childhood.
