You need the right state of mind to enjoy the Zohan
Aug 13, 2008
Enjoying Zohan requires a particular mindset, free from external considerations and rationality. You have to be willing to suspend your good taste, any political assessments of the current situation in the Middle East, and your rational assessment of the way the universe works. But, if you are willing to suspend all of those things for 2 hours, and you see it with a group of people willing to do the same, you will enjoy this movie tremendously. Don't mess with the Zohan got critically panned, but everyone in the small theater I saw it in was laughing for almost the entire movie. I think the critics hated it because they are paid not to suspend their critical judgment -- they have to be evaluating every scene, and this isn't a movie that you can enjoy while you are evaluating -- it interferes with the necessary suspensions. The makers of the movie understand this, and they start the movie with a series of scenes so improbable and outrageous that it amounts to a declaration of the right frame of mind for the movie. They do their best to overtly say to the audience at the beginning of the movie -- come on, suspend your normal frame of mind, and appreciate this movie for what it is. The movie holds together well once you accept that premise. From talking to friends, the best way to figure out whether you will like this movie is based on how you felt about Deuce Bigalow -- if you enjoyed that movie, you will probably also like this one. And if you hated Deuce Bigalow, then you might want to avoid Zohan.

Once upon a time Adam Sandler used to be a very funny comedian. He was on Saturday Night Live back in the day of its 2nd Renaissance when the group could be funny without having to mock politicians all the time. He had some hilarious comedy albums and he made some very funny movies, e.g. HAPPY GILMORE, BILLY MADISON, and THE WATERBOY. Maybe it's because he's gotten older, but Sandler's movies just aren't as funny as they used to be and YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN is one of the worst he's ever … more
"You Don't Mess With the Zohan" Looking at the Zohan Amos Lassen Adam Sandler is one of those comedians that people have no neutral opinions about---they either love his humor or hate it. If you watch "Don't Mess with the Zohan" with an open mind (and a knowledge of Hebrew and Arabic), you will be laughing your head off at one of the silliest movies I have ever seen. I have heard it called offensive and a waste of time and just … more
