Either too few people are on Lunch or most, in taste, are middle-America

Despite the hype, the Similarity Network returns really low results. For example there are only two people above 40% similarity for my tastes.

As I have entered the maximum number of choices in the set-up to give the most accurate profile, it seems Lunch is extremely bland. And/or bad.

For example, why would Desperate Housewives show up as a similarity choice with someone when I have it at -5 as a NO GO choice.

The algorithms under the bonnet at Lunch must be very poor.

Last.FM and Pandora are excellent at detecting similarities, providing hundreds of hours of listening pleasure.

Lunch has not provided a single interesting book or movie as a possibility for my interest.

Very disappointing.

PS - the Tags option often fails.

I sort of feel the same way. I've only been on here about an hour and I immediately want to go back and change my first 5 interests but I can't see how to do that. I don't know if I will be sticking around for much longer. I've been dreaming of a site to meet people with similar interests but it seems like there needs to be longer lists to help match people. I'm not really looking for music recommendations. I'm looking for something that can match me with people with similar taste in books, movies, hobbies, interests, etc. I find that I hate doing ratings, also. The most complex ratings I want to give are "hate, dislike, neutral, like, or love". "Dislike, Neutral, or Like", would work even better for me. I was hoping this would be a site that is sort of like Stumble Upon, but less complicated. I don't mind that this is a small community, but I do mind if it's a bland community. Hopefully I will get some further instructions/inspiration by reading the reviews here.

Hi there. devora and jrjohnson also replied to my review. In subsequent replies I explained how the Similarity algorithms they use are woeful. When I tried to check against another person, the results were: Only 1 book out of 43 has a similar rating and yet that is called 47% Only 5 movies out of 232 have similar ratings and yet that is called 43% Only 1 tv show out of 29 has a similar rating and yet that is called 48% Please understand that I did not approach Lunch with any negativity. My experiences with Last and Pandora have been really excellent and I am amazed at how "wrong" the results are with Lunch. Maybe in a year or two there will be better results but the arithmetic just looks too wayward at the moment.

Interesting review, but I have to point out -- Lunch isn't a radio/music streaming site ;)  To get the most out of the Similarity Network and to give Lunch a real fair assessment, you really have to dive right into the community.  As @jrjohnson pointed out, the Similarity Network takes into account many other factors besides the topics that you rate, including what you review, and who you interact with on the site.

The Similarity Network gets refined over time, and personally, after just a couple weeks of contributing and interacting on the site, the person with the highest similarity to me was in the 90'ish% range.  Now after having been on the site longer, the person with the highest similarity to me is 97% and all the top 50 people who have been matched up in my network I would say is pretty accurate.  There are over 300 people in my Similarity Network.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and I hope you do give Lunch another chance!  Oh, and Stay Positive ;)

thanks for the review. we always appreciate feedback and thanks for trying out Lunch. Just to answer a few things to help you have better experience on Lunch.... your similarity network has pages of similar people starting at 69%. i''m not sure what you were seeing but if you can replicate it, hit "feedback" tab so we can track it down. Here's your similarity network page http://www.lunch.com/StayPositive-SimilarityNetwork-1-1.html.

you are very right, that as Lunch grows you similarity network will continue to improve. Now that you've laid the foundational opinions, as new people join Lunch your similarity network will continue to improve as will the content that you'll find. We built Lunch to function best with millions of users so it will only go up from here... and i hope your rating Lunch does as well ;)

a couple other things to improve your experience here... fill out your profile including a pic. it makes the community more receptive to your opinions because you look like a real person rather than a fly bye. Also, share some comments, write some more reviews and interact with Lunch members more... all of that stuff goes into the sim network algorithm and will help you get the most out of Lunch. If this is your only review, then your Lunch similarity network might skew toward other people who also dislike Lunch... hmmmmm... irony.  also, i love your member name btw.

Okay, here's that odd circumstance where I am being offered something for nothing and whining about it.     As you can probably tell from my rating, I generally like Lunch.com. One of the site owners found my work on Epinions.com and asked me to drop in and give Lunch.com a quick whirl, even offering a little bit of payment as an incentive. With Epinions.com swirling ominously around the suckage drain at the moment, I shrugged and said "Well, why not?" And did I mention Lunch.com …

I blogged about Lunch.com on my personal blog (Sharrie.TV) 2 days ago.   Here it is:   As some of you might have know, I was into travelogues many years ago. Spent majority of my waking hours on VirtualTourist. Made some great friends along the way too & got to see many parts of the world which I otherwise wouldn't have step into!      Well, the boss JR Johnson sold it off (I believe he did unless I got my facts wrong!) and is beginning to …

Well, they got me.  I can't remember exactly when I came to Lunch.com.  It was in late December, and when I first got here, I must admit, I was not nearly as impressed.  But they were gracious enough to send me an invite and so I accepted.  Because I was curious.  The site was, for the most part nice, and they just kept improving.  Are there any immediate problems I have with the site now?  Well, not that haven't already been addressed …

Dear nonexistent people who who keep popping up at random: If you're only posting a phony profile of a person who doesn't actually exist, don't follow my work! You're a waste of space and having your name on my followers list is a discredit to me. If you're not an active poster and/or have never been an active poster and/or have no intention of ever being an active poster, you have no business placing me - or really ANYONE AT ALL - on your follow list!

Well, I'm not going to lie to you. Other than logging out for 15 minute coffee breaks at work or signing off for the end of the day, lunch is what I look forward to. Considering the work I do, lunch can never be heavy nor can I indulge myself in something too sweet. Perhaps a snack that's low in carbs, salts, & sugars will suffice while I catch up on emails or what not. Lunch is a very peaceful time of day where you kick back & relax while …

What's this—another social networking site??  Well, not exactly.  Unlike the other popular leading sites, MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, Lunch.com  uses your personal likes and dislikes to scientifically connect you with other members; it keeps a tab on what kind of things you like and makes no assumption that you are already seeking a connection with long lost friends, family, or coworkers. "It's not who you know, but what you know" on Lunch.com.      …

Please consider that this is a fictionalized account of how Lunch.com came to be. Once upon a time, there was an empty space in the information super-highway… Two exciting creative women met in the world of flashing lights.. One was called Healthy Rache. Another was called LingEatsCake. Healthy Rache insists that this empty spot in the cyberspace be made into her own image that it be made "Healthy" and full of energy and life. LingEatsCake insists that it be filled by all the sweetness of life--love …

I was invited and joined Lunch.com a few days ago.If you are into social networks this is a new twist to the original thing. But that is my first "but": I am on a few social networks and somehow never really got friends with them - facebook, twitter, perhaps I just do not know enough people at the beginning or perhaps as a German I am somehow on the wrong continent, or perhaps I am not - any longer! :-) or :-( - spending so much time in front of a computer, but somehow I feel quickly bored or somehow …
