Willing To Fight Lyrics (Lyrics Of The Week)

Of all the modern day folk artists, I don't think there is one nearly as prolific nor as insightful as the outspoken Ani Difranco. Not only is she one of the world's most prolific songwriters, she writes the stuff that most of us haven't the guts to spew on a mere piece of paper. Not only can DiFranco write, she is also no slouch on the guitar & the woman has a voice that's pleasing to the ears. Ani is living proof that you can be tough & get your point across to your audience without having to scream in their ears.

Having released over 20 albums in her solo career & owning her own record label called Righteous Babe records should be inspirational to us all yet the woman continues to amaze us with each new endeavor. Although DiFranco will never sign a label with anyone with any major record company, she has done remarkably well on her own & has even been touted as a Grammy award winner although I personally feel Ani has more talent in one thumb than the majority of the pre-packaged artists we see each year. In addition to winning the prestigious Grammy, DiFranco also received the "Woman of Courage Award"  at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference and Young Feminist Summit in Albany, New York. DiFranco is one of the first musicians to receive the award, given each year to a woman who has set herself apart by her contributions to the feminist movement.

Perhaps I'm just getting older or just realize more & more each day how valuable life is. Life would mean nothing to me if I didn't have choices & options. For granted, there is truly no happiness to be found in being a corporate slave nor any true joy in repetition. Thankfully, we all have important decisions to make regarding how we choose to live our lives & what we hope to accomplish in our time. There is always the option to sit it out & do absolutely nothing at all or we can take action. It's not always what we do that makes us who we are however. It's sometimes what we believe & how we influence others around us. You can make a difference in someones life just by merely setting a great example.

After turning 35, I realize that life is all about some choices that we come face to face with. There is no book with specific instructions on how to overcome certain situations nor a complete set of guidelines on how one should live their lives. Sometimes we simply learn from doing & have to chalk up a few losses as lessons learned. But, it's still important that we do act upon those things that need to be remedied in our lives irregardless of our fears. It's better to lose than to never try at all. Remember that even a bird's wings are so strong that they can glide over vast oceans & soar effortlessly in search of their needs. We, too, have strengths that enable us to do great things.
Here is a link if you should decide to check out the live version of her song.

The windows of my soul
Are made of one way glass
Don't bother looking into my eyes
If there's something you want to know,
Just ask
I got a dead bolt stroll
Where I'm going is clear
I won't wait for you to wonder
I'll just tell you why I'm here

'Cause I know the biggest crime
Is just to throw up your hands
This has nothing to do with me
I just want to live as comfortably as I can
You got to look outside your eyes
You got to think outside your brain
You got to walk outside your life
To where the neighborhood changes

Tell me who is your boogieman
That's who I will be
You don't have to like me for who I am
But we'll see what you're made of
By what you make of me
I think that it's absurd
That you think I am the derelict daughter
I fight fire with words
Words are hotter than flames
Words are wetter than water

I got friends all over this country
I got friends in other countries too
I got friends I haven't met yet
I got friends I never knew
I got lovers whose eyes
I've only seen at a glance
I got strangers for great grandchildren
I got strangers for ancestors

I was a long time coming
I'll be a long time gone
You've got your whole life to do something
And that's not very long
So why don't you give me a call
When you're willing to fight
For what you think is real
For what you think is right

I am so out of touch with most music these days...I think I should stop investing my money in crazy obscure cinema and go for the cds (no, did I just say that?!) Great find, Ceno! I need to visit those music stores more often...

I know the feeling. I used to collect a lot more music than I do right now. For the past year or so, I've been on a DVD buying spree that literally seems to end freaking endless. I mean, there's so much great stuff to be found. I will prolly re-visit my CD buying binge before too long. I'm glad you enjoyed the song & I'll try to find some more meaningful lyrics to post for the following week. Howz Woo doing?

As always, I love your music reviews and lists! Ani DiFranco is amazing and this review does her justice. And thanks for sharing your life revelations with us. I am definitely taking notes. Don't you love how songs can capture glimpses of your life and how you feel? :)

By the way, if you wanted to, you can actually embed that Youtube video into the review with the embed video button in the text editor bar ;)

Wow! That looks much, much better. Thnks again Deb for that helpful advice regarding the embed video button. I will definitely bear that in mind on all the future reviews as well. Thank you also for leaving me the grand compliment. I love Ani & I knew it was only a matter of time before I would have to write up something about her or post some of her lyrics. I'm glad this helps you too. It's true that music can really define who we are & also make us take a look at ourselves in the mirror. Hmm, am I passionate much here? LOL Thanks as always for everything you do!

Awesome that you embedded the video! Now I can read along to the lyrics from your review as the song plays. Nothing wrong with being passionate! :P In fact, I often tell people to write reviews about what they're most passionate about because those tend to end up being some of the best reviews I've ever read, like this one and your friendship review :)
