To me, Blut Aus Nord is one of the most refreshing and best black metal bands to form in the last 18-20 years, and so far, they're my favorite metal band from France.
One of the reasons why I feel they're such a strong band is because they like to dabble with some bizarre musical elements in their black metal formula, but at the same time, they usually don't overpower the black metal aesthetic with any stupid, gimmicky crap that feels like experimentation for experimentation's sake. While they're not perfect (no band is), they're in really good standing with me, and I'll be eager to check out whatever album they're cranking out next.
To get a good taste of the band, here's two tracks. One covers their atmospheric beginnings and the other covers their more experimental phases.
If you want to get into Blut Aus Nord, check out the albums "Ultima Thulee" and "The Work Which Transforms God" first, then venture off into whatever of their output you desire most.
