Elliott Carter, (probably) the greatest American composer, has fortunately only become more prolific in his old age. Both the Clarinet Concerto and _Symphonia_ were written when the composer when was in his eighties. His music is a personal style of adapted atonality and extreme rhythmic complexity.    The clarinet concerto was written for and premiered by Pierre Boulez and his Ensemble InterContemporain, and was arranged to work with the EIC's unusual lineup of musicians.
