Whether these selections of Latin American music or the magically exciting performance of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story Mambo are to your liking, there is no denying that Gustavo Dudamel understands the scores he conducts and is able to make them come alive. Yes, there is considerable hype surrounding this young magician of a conductor, but spend some time with this recording or better yet attend a concert that he conducts and you will be astonished at just how musical he is.     While …

The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra is an inspiring sight in concert, a vast sea of joyful young faces all concentrating on making something beautiful for all of us. It's a large orchestra, larger than most American communities can afford even with the donations of wealthy individuals and foundations, but it's almost entirely supported by the government of Venezuela.
