Good Blues But Clapton Has Done Better

  • Feb 7, 2005
Don't get me wrong, Eric Clapton is a master at playing blues within his rock n roll stylings. The interpretations of Robert Johnson's pieces are quite reasonable. Billy Preston's keyboards stand out very prominently as his solos and embelleshments are truly Grade A. Songwise, my preffered tracks are They're Red Hot, When You Got Good Friends, Come Into My Kitchen, and Stop Breakin' Down Blues.

However when comparing this tribute recording to similar work as From The Cradle and Riding With The King, Me and Mr Johnson clearly finishes in third place. On Me and Mr. Johnson most of the arrangements are fairly identical with limited varitions in the song pacings. Yes, there are a couple of slow tunes and a few go very fast. But the drumming does not change very much throughout the fourteen track recording.

Also to note, somehow the overall feel of the blues is lacking here. Eric performs many of these songs in an blues-lite manner with limited hard ripping passion either from his voice or guitar. Don't get me wrong some of the mellow Clapton tones are fine. However, the sound wears thin when the tone does not vary two thirds of the way through the recording. Just listen to From The Cradle. Eric tears up the guitar and growls with a passion on Someday After A While, Groaning The Blues, and Five Long Years. Nothing on Me and Mr. Johnson approaches these efforts.

Therefore, the rating on Me and Mr. Johnson rates as a good 3-3 1/2 star level instead of a 4-5 star level that From The Cradle and Riding With The King stand.
