THE HUNGER GAMES SOUNDTRACK is the soundtrack from THE HUNGER GAMES movie. However, the subtitle of this cd is "Songs from District 12 and Beyond," which is fitting because there's really only two songs in the movie and neither of them are on the soundtrack. There are three songs played during the closing credits and each of them is included. Those songs are "Abraham's Daughter" by Arcade Fire, "Safe & Sound" by Taylor Swift, and "Kingdom Come" by The Civil Wars. The overall sound of the album is a bit unusual; they all share a blue-grass vibe to them, though some have a harder edge to them that borders on rockified-country. However, the music fits because it does seem to capture the spirit of District 12 in the movie. Personally, the songs I liked best are the ones that play during the credits. The only other song I really enjoy is "The Ruler and the Killer" by Kid Cudi. Overall, this is an interesting cd filled with music atypical of the studio system. Fans of THE HUNGER GAMES might enjoy it, though if they are looking for actual music from the movie they'll need to purchase THE HUNGER GAMES SCORE instead of THE HUNGER GAMES SOUNDTRACK. It's not the best "inspired-by" soundtrack I've heard, but kudos to T Bone Burnett for trying to orchestrate something original that has a distinctly rural American-feel to it.
