Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings sountracks are easily the best movie soundtracks since Star Wars (I mean the original trilogy). This is a masterpiece. It combines beautiful, heart-rendering songs (particularly any of the Elves' themes) with great action/adventure scores (the Fellowship theme). Pros: Yet another work of art from Howard Shore. Cons: It’s the last CD of the trilogy =..( The Bottom Line: If you liked the first two CDs, why not finish them off? If you don't have any, why not start? You know, I think they should make a movie from the Hobbit – after all, why not? Howard Shore has done an amazing thing: composing and orchrestrating three separate soundtracks that not only stand alone by themselves, but that can be played together as one seamless whole. Peter Jackson did it with the movies, but Shore's job was more difficult because he wasn't scoring all three films simultaneously. Anyway, there are some familiar refrains from FELLOWSHIP and TWO TOWERS on this album. However, there are several differences. The major new instrumental piece is "Minas Tirith". … more

This music is the completion of a journey begun over two years ago.When I first heard, quite a while ago now, that Howard Shore had been selected to write the music for "The Lord of the Rings" films, I wasn't sure what to think. I liked Shore's music well enough from movies like "Silence of the Lambs" or "Seven," but I wasn't sure how he would handle the epic nature of something like this.
