The Slim Shady LP; A sad, sad, angry little man...

  • Jun 22, 2000
Pros: None come to mind...

Cons: The CD is filled with sludge...

After reading the lyrics to The Slim Shady LP I thought to myself in an angry, befuddled, and dumbfounded tone, “what on God’s green Earth is this? Have American corporations reached the point where they will sell anything to anyone in the quest for profits? It would seem so!”

I decided to investigate Eminem’s brand of rap after listening to Guilty Conscience release from the The Slim Shady LP and seeing the video on MTV. I enjoyed the video and the message the music had to relate and thought Eminem might be about something positive; an artist with something to say worth listening to. And maybe he will have positive influence on the youth that listened to him. Wrong! Very wrong! Very, very wrong!

Eminem has been in the news a lot lately, and most of the stories have been related to the ongoing struggle, trials, and tribulations with his wife. Seems he has said some pretty unsavory things about her (and his mother) in the lyrics to his songs, so before I went and made a purchase, I checked out the lyrics to the songs from The Slim Shady LP as well as The Marshall Mathers LP. What I found was disturbing on a number of levels, but the moral of the story is: if you value your children’s morals and principles, do not let them listen to this very angry, disturbed, repugnant, and socially retarded individual!

Eminem rose to wide spread public awareness on the strength of Guilty Conscience and My Name is…, back in the later part of 1999. Both of these hits are off of The Slim Shady LP. And while I will admit that both have a catchy beat and redeeming message on the surface, what lies below the surface is a whole other matter altogether. My Name is… for instance was recorded in three different versions, two of which…I say again: Eminem is one very angry and , disturbed, repugnant, and socially retarded individual!.

Those emotions and feeling most of us keep hidden deep within us and deal with internally, he has given a very vulgar descriptive voice to! I get the impression that like many of today’s youth—those X-gen’ers we all know, love, hate, and (sometimes) envy—that Eminem wants us to share his pain, live inside his tortured, demented mind and wallow in the darkness that has invested his soul with mean spirited and ugly anger. He wants us to know how rotten his life has been, as if our own day-to-day lives weren’t enough to numb and depress us. As if our own childhoods were glittering playgrounds lined with lollipops and chocolate kisses, and all of our peers and teachers loved us!

Are we supposed to feel sorry for him, or just feel pity for his weakness of character, principles, and morals? Does he find comfort and truth in degrading women, promoting violence, self-mutilation, perversion, homophobic hatred, incest, battery, and murder, or is it just for the shock value? Does he really want our children to follow him to the road the hell, or is he just trying to sell CD’s? No matter which of the two choices you make, or which conclusion you draw, his moral compass is certainly highly defective.

Except for Guilty Conscience the only thing this CD is good for is craft day at the local community center; throwing against a brick wall to see how long it takes to break; testing the melting point of plastic in the hot summer sun on the sidewalk outside your house; or using it as a pencil toy. It certainly not fit for human aural consumption!
