1 review about Three Dog Night: Complete Hit Singles

From soup to nuts....all of the great hits from this popular 1970's band.

About ten years ago I purchased the two-disc set "Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story 1965-1975". At the time it was clearly the best Three Dog Night collection on the market.  But frankly, this package really had more than I needed or wanted.  I was primarily interested in all of those hit singles the boys made in their heyday from 1969 thru 1974.  Back in 2004 the folks at UTV released the single disc compilation "Three Dog Night: Complete Hit Singles".  This was really the collection I had been looking for all along.  "Complete Hit Singles" features each and every one of the band's 21 Top 40 hits and the price is right to boot.

First of all let me be clear.  These are the original hit singles you would remember from the radio.  Each and every tune has been digitally remastered for your listening enjoyment.  Enjoy once again Three Dog Night's memorable #1 singles including "Black & White", "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" from 1970 and of course the group's biggest hit ever "Joy To The World" which sat at the top of the Billboard Top Pop Singles chart for 6 weeks back in the spring of 1971.  When Three Dog Night was churning out all of those great hits Top 40 radio was still a major force in American popular music. During those years you would be hard pressed to listen to your favorite Top 40 AM station and not hear a Three Dog Night tune at lease once every couple of hours.  If you are old enough you probably recall listening to tunes like "Eli's Coming", "Shambala" and "An Old Fashioned Love Song" on your transistor radio or perhaps while cruisin' in your banged up 1963 Chevy.  Some of my favorite Three Dog Night tunes were not necessarily among the group's biggest hits.  I would count "Celebrate", "Out In The Country" and most especially "Pieces of April" in this category.  Happily, all are included in this collection.

Unfortunately, Three Dog Night would break-up in the mid-1970's.  But they have left us with a body of work that clearly has stood the test of time.  As evidence of this another one of their "Greatest Hits" packages regularly turns up on the Billboard 200 Albums chart (#176 this week).  That is pretty impressive.  Amazon reviewers seem to be pretty unanimous about this. "Three Dog Night: Complete Hit Singles" is the best available collection of this legendary group.  You will get no arguments from me.  Very highly recommended!

I love Three Dog Night and yet, I only own them on vinyl. This disc sounds like a great CD to break that habit. Thanks, Paul!
