Love, A Good Kind of Hole in the Head

By no means is Courtney Love a picture of physical or mental health.  She's probably not even that good of a person and if you asked her who Kim Jong Il is, I'm sure she'd try and order it at a Chinese Restaurant.

That said, you can't deny that her band, Hole, is one o
f the great post-punk bands to date.  If you pull your head out of your ass and ignore the foggy mass of controversy that surrounds her, you might find Hole quickly becoming one of your favorite bands.

Yes, their music is
frozen in time because they are no longer together, but I would argue that Celebrity Skin is one of the best (and most overlooked) albums of the ninties.  After Smashing Pumpkins,  Hole represents the post punk pop-grunge period even better than Nirvana.  Billy Corgan even wrote the song "Celebrity Skin", but Love too holds her own in the lyrical department.  There's a reason Kurt Cobain was banging this crazy ho.  Yes, it could be attributed to their massive mutal heroine addiction, but at the end of the day, lady can jam.

I'm usually skeptical o
f female band leaders, especially when it comes to any rock genre, but she managed to pull it off with utterly no grace and a ton of raspy, strung out angst anthems that have triple digit play counts on my ITunes.

The beauty in both "Celebrity Skin" and critically acclaimed "Live Through This" is that Love is obviously not a one trick pony, like many rock icons.  Dark, light,
fast, slow, whatever you're looking for, you'll be able to find it in her music and while her style is consistant, her songs neever sound the same.  Versatility goes a long way with me and the music I listen to.

Love

Courtney Love is kinda a mess but when she speaks, she's actually pretty smart and articulate. Live Through This was the soundtrack of my sophomore year in high school. The riffs were simple but solid the whole way through,... the lyrics were so residual of the riot-grrl going on at the time. Thanks.. I haven't thought about Celebrity Skin in a really long time... maybe I'll dig that up and give it a listen. : ]
