Before I would have ever even heard of karaoke, I was belting this song out in duet with Marc Almond on the radio. The track is pretty standard (albeit extremely engaging) New Wave fare, complete with mixtures of rock and electronics, compositional simplicity and emotional complexity, and red-blooded, hetero anguish alongside naughty androgyny. What's so awesomely funny about this song, which was an international smash hit, was how very naughty (to the point of profanity) this band really was, giving rise to the image of a middle-of-the-road pop fan picking up any of the band's other material and being shocked into recognition of the kind of thing  that goes on in dark alleys lit by neon.

All said, the grimy sexuality of Soft Cell subtly alluded to in this track was mostly all for show, making "Tainted Love" a perfect song to get dramatically over the top with. And what better platform is there for approaching such a tune than one equipped with a karaoke machine? The extended single, which morphs into a schmaltzy (but equally compelling, and infinitely more so in a karaoke setting) cover of The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" takes this song to a whole other place.

This is my go-to song whenever I karaoke. You don't have to have a great voice to sing this, and it gets everyone up to shake their booty and sing-along to. I definitely like to deviate from this song from time-to-time, but when I'm feeling nostalgaic or realize that I've failed trying to pull off some Bell Biv DeVoe, I go to this for a quality make-over.
