Grading On A Curve

It's amazing the vitriol that gets tossed around when someone has the gall to question the singular "artistry" of Yoko Ono. If you are at all intellectually honest, her presence on some of John's solo work took the concept of tone-deaf family discounting into uncharted territory.

For the same reason Citizen Kane would be severely degraded by the surprise inclusion of Pauly Shore footage every ten minutes to satisfy some film student's warped appetite for the perverse, Double Fantasy, stripped or otherwise, loses almost all momentum when it downshifts from pop masterwork to avante garde experiment just to accomodate Yoko.

Back in 1980 I listened to Double Fantasy endlessly before I decided to compile a "John Only" cassette. Although I am absolutely sure that Yoko is a wonderful person, if she wants to continue as a recording artist and put herself out in the public domain, her efforts are fair game for comment (as are mine in this forum.)

That said, Double Fantasy "Stripped" is an important addition to the Lennon legacy. While most songs have been subtly altered for time and production clarity several, most notably, I'm Losing You have had their vocal tracks enhanced considerably - making this release more than worthwhile - warts and all.
