The "MUSIC" of Smurfs & Gnomes

  • Dec 14, 2010
I have very, very mixed feelings about this CD. I will return to this notion in a moment. The following is a confession; I for many, many years have listened to mellow music as I fall asleep. These cacophonies are usually ambient, classical, or scores. However, I recently bought a house with my girlfriend and she doesn't, how do I say this, have the same passion for using tunes to induce slumber as I do. It isn't because she likes the music, but she is a light sleeper and it can keep her awake. Isn't this a quagmire?

So I decided to get my hands on a CD that has "natural sounds" on it. I bought Sounds of Thunder By the Sea and it is awesome. It is just thunder and surf hitting the shore. It is very hypnotizing, my girlfriend and I are both able to unwind to it. So I figured, why not try another "natural sounds" CD.

This leads me to this CD, cool mountain streams. As noted prior, I have mixed feelings about this CD. I am at fault for not reading the label before purchasing. The label says "natural sounds blended with beautiful music". Yes you read that right, "music". I was also bamboozled by the other reviews in this forum conveying that this CD has just beautiful sounds. Well I am here to let you know, that there is music on this CD, not just a stream.

As for the music, it is sort of hokey and sounds like something that the Smurfs and a family of Gnomes would play at their Field Day. All joking aside, the music is very polished and professional, but I did not find it very soothing. It was rather loud. As for the stream, when left to its own devices it sounds really nice. There are some bird chirps thrown in for good measure, but it isn't long before the music returns.

I wouldn't say this is a bad CD per se, but I wouldn't recommend it for sleeping or relaxing. It might serve well as background noise and does have a peaceful and jubilant quality to it. I also take some responsibility for not digging deeper and realizing that there was music on this CD. Therefore, I cannot totally abase this product.

It is rather brisk in this field. The leaves are descending like a tapestry of aloof dreams. The wind entices these leaves into a plume of whimsical billowing ontological paradox. Then I recall that I … more
