Volume Two is the second album from the duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. The production of M. Ward and the sweet melancholy vocals and lyrics provided by the talented Zooey makes this disc a winner. The album's tracks feature the single "In the Sun", a cheerful and poppy song with a sad melancholic overtone. This is what I like about the band and it makes it stand out from the rest of the pack. The stripped down but complex sound of the music (unlike the mass overproduced and auto-tuned tunes currently clogging up the airwaves). Zooey's voice has a sweet quality with a slight nervousness to it (which adds to the vocals instead of sounding artificially processed in the studio). Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward serve up another slice of Phil Spector-esque, summertime pop and country-tinged wistfulness. This is a very nostalgic sounding record that evokes classic 60s and 70s, singer/songwriter material, but it has enough of a contemporary flavour to prevent things from sounding like a pastiche. M.
