If you're a girl and you have never rocked out to "It's My Party (and I'll Cry if I want to)" at age 6....you haven't lived. That's the first song that i can remember that got me into "Girl Groups".
Girl Groups became popular in the 1950's and have been remembered as classics ever since. The movie "DreamGirls" definitely helped remind us of them. Girl Groups are composed of some of the best things on earth: catchy melodies, perfect harmonies, and one or more attractive women dressed in fabulous (and often matching) clothes.
It's weird - even though most of these songs seem like innocent tunes sung by naive teen girls, many of the songs deal with deeper issues (remember - many of the songs were we define as Girl Group classics were written by male record execs, not the girls themselves). Sure, there are songs about breaking up with your boyfriend (the head of the football team, of course) but there are also songs that deal with boyfriends going off to war, domestic abuse, rape, and even suicide! Listen close - there are often innuendos for sex and other things - this is the 1950s&60s, after all.
"One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found" is a great collection of songs by Girl Groups and Girl Singers, both popular and rare. It's hard to find someone who won't like this collection - it's great to drive to, work to, and if you put it on at a party several people are sure to sing along. Rhino Records is a must for great compilations!
Nobody Knows What's Going On (In My Mind but Me) - The Chiffons
(terrible quality, but what do you expect from 1960-something?)
