Somewhere Over The Rainbow

I wrote about the song As Time Goes By (soundtrack from the movie Casablanca) yesterday and Sean mentioned about Wizard of Oz. Somewhere over the rainbow is another classic from those time (ie. my parents' time or even before!). Thanks to my parents I heard the original sung by Judy Garland and thanks again to Youtube I found this song on the web.

Original artist is Judy Garland but the song was also sung by a wonderful artist Doris Day. Here's Doris Day's version...

And just early this year, a 6 year old Connie Talbot made it to the final with this particular song on Britain's Got Talent (2007) but lost to Paul Potts in the final. Her debut album in November 2007 was Over the Rainbow which reached no. 1 in 3 countries.

Watch out for this star, a 6 year old, a force to be reckon with in the future... her version of I will always love you, a song sung by Whitney Houston. It's amazing, she will rival Whitney Houston one fine day!!! Amazing! She made Amanda cried over & over again on Britain's Got Talent!

My favorite version of this tune has to be the one recorded by Harry Nilsson. It was used at the end of "You've Got Mail" when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan meet in the park. I am not ashamed to say that that scene with this song never fails to bring a tear to my eye!

I didn't see the movie but I've surely heard this piece of melody. It's a timeless classic!

About this song

"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a classic ballad song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by Judy Garland in that movie. Over time it would become Garland's signature song.

In the film, part of the song is played by the MGM orchestra over the opening credits. About 20 minutes later, Garland, in the role of Dorothy, sings Over the Rainbow after unsuccessfully trying to get her aunt and uncle to listen to her regarding an unpleasant incident involving Dorothy's dog Toto and the nasty spinster Miss Gulch, whom Toto bit after she struck him with a rake. Dorothy's Aunt Em tells her to "find a place where you won't get yourself into any trouble", prompting the girl to walk off by herself and sing the song.
