V Sattui's wines are great. They have a good reputation, and there's always a crowd of people taking wine flights at the winery or at outlets in and around neighboring towns.

But what drew me here in my college days at UC Davis was their deli sandwiches. They were absolutely divine. Served on fresh focaccia bread, choices included turkey cranberry, roast beef, ham, and others that varied by season.

Let me tell you: my family and I first ate here while on a trip up north back in 1999. Their food was so good that when I returned to Napa on my own as a junior in college, I knew exactly what I was looking for as I drove up Route 29-128 and found it on the first attempt. I didn't even need a map. Nothing had changed, and my friends and I made dozens upon dozens of return visits in the following years just for the sandwiches. Sure, I put more than a thousand miles on my car as the visits piled up, but each mile was worth it!

If you're in the area, get here early (before 11:30) or later (after 2:00) to avoid the huge crowds of locals and tourists that eat here on a daily basis. If you do arrive during the lunch rush, wait your turn. It is well worth your time and travels.

I could not agree more! The wine is consistently good, well made and fun to quaff! The deli is exactly as you described it, everytime I'm in Napa I head to V. Sattui for lunch!
