The story opens as a man comes down stairs for his morning paper and sees the headline that he's dead and his wife is missing.
Flashback to the night before, after attending an event in honor of former FBI director Sam Norris, his step-daughter, FBI Special Agent Mia Keeler, and Mia's husband Jack, District Attorney head home. They are stopped at a bridge and ordered from their car. When Jack resists, he's shot in the arm, place back in his car and pushed off the bridge into the water. Mia is kidnapped.
Jack survives but with the car at the bottom of the water, it is assumed that he and Mia drowned.
After seeing the headlines about his death, he examines himself and sees his shoulder wound is stitched up and there is a tattoo on his arm but in foreign words he doesn't understand.
With his old partner from homicide days on the police force, they are at Jack's home when a man tries to sneak in. They subdue him but before they can question him, the man runs away and something happens.
What are the pieces to the story? Who kidnapped Mia and how could they have staged it so well?
Jack has his tattoo translated and makes an admission that changes the course of the novel and adds a philosophical element to the story.
The pacing is excellent as tension mounts with realistically described characters. Things take twists and turns and nothing is as it seems.
The book is worth reading for the fast paced story and characters. A very creative plot that had me wondering how could this have happened.
