Dave Robicheaux is recovering from a gunshot in the back. He's been given morphine for the pain and as an alcoholic, he's having difficulty managing his meds. One night, a young woman, Tee Jolie comes to visit and brings an i-Pod so he can listen to music. She tells him that she's pregnant from a man who isn't divorced.

Dave isn't sure if the events were just a dream but the i-Pod is by his bed. When he's well enough to leave, he learns that Tee Jolie is missing. He moves his recovery into speed drive and is soon working full time.

As he searches for Tee Jolie, he comes into contact with Pierre Dupre an artist, and his grandfather, who has a questionable past during WWII.

A number of people try to take action against Dave and they are killed. Then, Dave and his partner, Clete Purcel, learn that a new contract killer has come to town. Clete meets a woman, Gretchen Horowitz and thinks she might be the contract killer. He is also sure that she is his daughter from an affair many years ago.

Burke's writing is always imaginative and eloquently descriptive. For example, "There was a Japanese tulip tree by the edge of the water...wind blew and a shower of pink and lavender petals on top of the water slid in with the tide."

I was entertained by the characters with Dave and Clete having one of the longest and closest relationships of any characters in literature.

A novel not to miss. It adds to Burke's reputation as one of our best writers.

Dave Robicheaux is back one more time in "Creole Belle"

Morphine is a wonderful drug for those who need it. Dave Robicheaux certainly needs it as he slowly recovers in a New Orleans hospital from being shot twice in the back. For a person with Dave's documented addictions, morphine is a dangerous drug that could easily end his hard fought sobriety.
