This review was written while my family and I were staying at Bay Lake Tower in May 2010
Here is a photo of Bay Lake Tower taken from the pool:
Today is our 8th day here and this is my overall opinion of Bay Lake Tower from the week's stay:
Let me start by saying this place was pretty much exactly what I expected. I researched about it, I read other people's experiences with their stays and visits here and so I knew what to expect. What I didn't expect was the lack of atmosphere and that I just can't describe.
I suppose I've been spoiled by the Polynesian. However, we visited a few other resorts and to me, every resort made me feel like I was somewhere else. The Polynesian made me feel like I was somewhere tropical, the Beach Club gives the feel of being on a beach, even the Yacht Club has that 'ritzy' Yacht Club feel. Here at Bay Lake Tower I feel as though I am in some apartment complex in the city. Maybe that is the atmosphere that is intended?
The bathroom doors slide open and shut which is a nice modern design BUT they do not latch or lock so the doors are constantly opening on their own. It's noisy here; I was out on the balcony and felt like I was overlooking a busy city. My mother in law couldn't even use her phone outside because the person on the other end couldn't hear her.
There is no convenience; we have to go over to the contemporary to check in and out, to get food and drinks, for souvenir shopping and to get transportation to places. Now, when we stayed at the Polynesian we stayed in 'Tahiti' and that was a pretty long walk from the main Great Ceremonial House BUT we were still at the same resort and the walkways are beautiful and THAT makes a huge difference.
We were to the Top of the World Lounge last night to watch Wishes. I was surprised at how small the actual lounge is. The outside viewing area is a primo spot but small kids can't see anything because the wall is so high and I understand WHY it's high (safety) but maybe a lower portion should be made of plexi-glass in some areas just so little people can see.
If you like modern and don't mind noise, BLT is a good resort for you. The views are phenomenal, no matter what side you're on! The rooms are beautiful and very spacious - but we stayed in a 2 bedroom, I am not sure how roomy the studios are. There isn't much excitement going on; you don't see much of the hustle and bustle of people checking in and out (unless you have a view of the parking lot, like we did!) and the sitting area and pool are beautiful - we definitely enjoyed that part!
I am not unhappy with my decision to become a DVC member; we'll be staying at other resorts to check them out and I'm glad BLT is my home resort since it's new and the maintenance fees are not too high but I am not in any hurry to stay here again. In October we're staying at Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa :)
