Ever see a movie that you can't wait to get back from and tell everyone about? That's THIS movie. Avatar can make that claim for last year, but this one will be held in people's memories until 2011. I just got back from seeing it and I want to tell you all about it. Well, not everything, that's not my style, but if you're wondering if you should go to theater to catch this, I hope I can make you go the rest of the way.

I didn't know what to expect from this movie. I had seen the trailers, some of the press photos like everyone else has. Somehow I didn't see any interviews the actors were doing for the film. Sometimes having no idea is the best way to go into a movie. We're all expecting some wonders in special effects and that's what you're going to get. The last time this movie was done it was done animated. I know I wasn't the only one who grew up watching the original. To do this movie live action, you HAVE to have special effects, and now it looks like we've finally gotten there.
Alice in Wonderland is based off of both "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" and "Through The Looking Glass" by Lewis Caroll. You'll see where each part of his story fits in as the movie goes on. I found the plot very interesting and worth following. As special effects driven at it is the movie is also story driven. Sure, there are some things you can call early on, but if you're doing that you're not really watching a movie just to enjoy it are you? Enjoy this movie for what it is. What it is to you will be different than for me, but it's a fun, fantasy adventure of a classic tale everyone knows well or had heard of.
In roles for actors seemed destined to play then, you've got Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter. I don't know what I was expecting with this particular casting, but everyone would probably think of Depp first in such a role. He was certainly entertaining, but not screen stealing. This is important. The movie is about Alice and he knows when to tone it down. Anne Hathaway as the White Queen is also great casting. I'm probably a little biased, but there are few other actresses I'd cast in a role meant to define and personify purity and beauty. She's a brilliant actress and like the rest of the cast knows well the focus of this movie. Helena Bohnam Carter is cast as the Red Queen. She has played some crazy roles in her time including the psycho Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series. I think this role really works for her too. I can't say she'd be my first choice, but I don't have a second choice to propose either. She did a wonderful job as the jealous Red Queen.
In this Wonderland world Lewis created it's hard to not find a memorable character. All the animals have personality as well as the stuffy family Alice tries to get away from in the beginning of the film. I think we all have our favorite characters, mine being the Mad Hatter from back in the original animated movie. The big picture plot of this movie is good versus evil, but it delves a bit deeper than that. This story is so great because it demands more from people.
It demands more from them, not in a push-for-greatness, accomplish-more sense. It demands more from people to use their imaginations, remember the wonders of being a kid and that we forget that sort of thing as an adult. That, perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to shrug off the dreams and fantasies kids can create. Who are we to say they're not true? Who are we to say they're not real? What seems to be a dream might be a forgotten memory. Alice in Wonderland wants us to open our minds to the impossible. You may not believe in talking rabbits and a world like Wonderland, but I'm sure it's all the same to them since they don't believe in you either.
I'd see this movie again. That says a lot, to me, in my reviews. Anything worth seeing twice is worth watching. This is one of those movies you'll watch time and again.

I was waiting eagerly for this movie, but other negative print reviews I have seen were making me rethink my $15 for a 3-D ticket. Thanks for a different slant. I'll definitely go!

Good review. This is definitely something I'd like to see, but not something I'm going to rush to the theatres for. I personally think that Anne Hathaway looks strange with the lighter hair, but that's just me. Thanks for the insight.

You'd think that Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland would be a perfect combination right? I actually did like most of what Tim Burton did with the movie, seeing as I was never terribly attached to the Disney one in my childhood, but I can definitely see why fans of the original film may be disappointed. One year for Chanukah when I was a little girl, my parents bought me a collection of "the classics". Most kids would probably have been disappointed, wishing instead for the new Barbie or video game, but I've always loved to read so I was ecstatic. You know, I don't pay much attention to professional movie reviews so when I read on Twitter that the critics trashed Alice in Wonderland, I was a little surprised. There's a lot of criticism focusing around Tim Burton at the moment and it's spiked at the release of this film. The major criticisms directed at Burton focus on his lack of any original ideas and the re-casting of the same actors in every film he makes. Johnny Depp is a great actor; I don't think anybody would deny this, but to cast him in almost every movie made by Burton is just insane and has become repetitive to the point it's becoming damaging to Depp's career. Alright, so I am a HUGE Johnny Depp fan. I loved his collaboration with Burton in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so I was very excited for Alice in Wonderland. I just went this past weekend with my sister and her boyfriend to see Tim Burtons 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland. I will admit that I went into this moive with ALOT of secptism. I am very familer with Tim Burtons works and I don't really think he has done anything all out amzing since The Nightmare Before Christmas.
