My Favorite Female Singers

As usual this list is NOT in any particular order. This is driving me crazy. I've tried 5 or 6 times now to add some text next to Cilla Black and Teresa Teng but it never publishes. Maybe it will up here. Cilla Black was introduce to The Beatles' manager by John Lennon. She had a career longer than any of his clients save the Beatles themselve. Her biggest hit was "You're My World". Teresa Teng Chu-Li was a very popular singer of Chinese folk songs and romantic ballads. She died in 1995 at the age of 42 after suffering a severe asthma attack. My favorite was a cover she did of Cilla Black's "You're My World". I love foreign language covers.

Judy Henske
A folk singer with a voice that sounded like a semi in second gear driving down a gravel road.
5
Cilla Black
A short lived career in the US sadly.

Big Mama Thornton
Big Mama was THE Rhythm and Blues singer as far as I'm concerned. If you ever want to know just how white Elvis was just listen to Mama sing "Hound Dog" the way it was meant to be sung.  She also probably given Joplin a few pointers when it came to singing "Ball And Chain".  The woman was a national treasure.

What did you think of this list?

Nice list. I think you will find that when it comes to music we have lots in common. Remember the Lovin' Spoonful??

I loved the Spoonful. I've only seen them once in concert but I've seen John Sebastian solo twice--once at the Atlanta rock festival and another time at a really small venue i n Tampa. I like CCR too but sadly I've never seen them or John Fogarty in concert.

It's amazing how many people are saying that! Nearly everyone who has read the list has! Only one person mentioned elsewhere that he hadn't heard of her. There's another Chinese singer I liked a lot, but no one every told me who he was. They just sent me his tapes.

Great list, Miss Queenbflix!  I think all these women are/were national treasures of their country, even Janis Joplin, though I can see why some wouldn't want to admit it.  I'm going ga ga over the fact that Teresa Teng is on your list, too, I grew up listening to her with my parents! :)

Just out of curiousity, is Teresa Teng any relation to singer-songwriter Vienna Teng? ;-)
August 08, 2009
Hmmm, not that I know of.  Vienna and Teresa both are Taiwanese though, share the same last name, and both once covered the same song, but I think that's about it!

Hmm, have heard of quite a few on your list. I am wondering if Teresa Teng is any relation to the singer-songwriter Vienna Teng? Very cool list. I definitely would rank Jnais Joplin at the top too!

I'm not certain. If she is it wasn't mentioned in anything I've read about her. The list isn't in any particular order, none of mine ever are, if it was I think Aretha or Big Mama might be at the top.

Hmm, I will have to look into her music sometime. Vienna Teng is singer-songwriter who plays piano. Most of her stuff is fairly mellow & I guess you could say it's folky pop-rock with some jazzy undertones. You might like it. It's very easy-going music with intelligient lyrics. Let me know if you should decide to check it out.

Are you still having problems with entering text next to your choices? I love this list...Big Mama is AMAZING, Janis, Babs, Aretha....great job! I'm going to have to make my own when I get a chance!

Cool! We can make comments on lists now. That must have happened very recently. Yeah, I'm still having problems with that. Maybe it's just with that one because I put it into "Save" for awhile. That can do odd things sometimes. Please get cracking and do some lists of singers and stuff too!

There are as many great musicians (namely women) out there as there are stars in the sky. Mind you, this list is not all-inclusive of the various artists …
