My Favorite Movie Comedies--Part One

  • Jun 14, 2010
These are Not presented in order of preference or in any order at all other than as they occured to me.
1
Strictly Ballroom
Wacky goings on in New Zealand as Baz Luhrmann takws us inside the world of competitive ballroom dancing. (They make some really funny flix downunder.)
2
Poster for the film.
Blaxplotation as only the Wayans Bros can do it.
3
Man Bites Dog
Funny Belgian mocumentary about a serial killer and the film crew that is documenting his day to day existence.
4
George of the Jungle
I'll always love George and Brendan Fraser plays him perfectly.
5
Om Shanti Om
Unrequited love, murder revenge, reincarnation AND lots of singing dancing anf laughs. What more could you want from Shah Rukh Khan?
See the full review, "WHAT THE FISH!".
6
The Big Picture
Kevin Bacon plays a young director who learns how easy it is to sell out your principles when he finally gets a chance to make his movie.
7
The Naked Gun
Det. Frank Drebbin is on a mission to save the Queen of England from an assassination attempt when she visits L.A.
9
Big Girls Don't Cry, They Get Even
A teenaged girl tried to cope with her overly extended family. "MY dad is forty, looks like he's thirty, thinks he's twenty, and acts like he's ten. But he's fun to play board games with."
10
Blind Fury
Rutger Hauer in a comedy? Now THAT'S scary. He plays sort of a blind Japanese swordsman, if you can picture that. In fact he plays a blind swordsman even if you can't picture it.
11
The Wedding Banquet
A young Chinese man suddenly has to produce a fiance when his parents arrive from China for a visit. The problem is that he's not engaged and he's currently living with his kwailo homosexual lover. Oops.
12
Pipe Dream
A lonely plumber poses as a director in order to meet women. The writer whose script he's tolen uses the opportunity to try and get her movie made. Smarter than it sounds.
13
The Matador (Widescreen Edition) (2006)
Pierce Brosnan is a high level hitman who just can't do it anymore. Greg Kinnear is the Joe Average he befriends and asks for help.
14
Raising Arizona
The Coen Borthers' classic about a couple that just wants a baby.
15
Dick
Two teenages girls become involved with Nixon and Watergate.
16
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
No real knowledge of Hamlet needed here, just a willingness to strain your ears for the verbal bon mots. The film was shot on location and the castle was not soundtrack friendly.
17
Hollywood Shuffle
Robert Townsend's film about the problems associated with being a black actor in Hollywood.
19
20
Dogma
Damon and Affleck are cast out angels trying to get back into heaven even though it means the the destruction of all creation.
23
Stuck On You (Widescreen Edition) (2003)
Why doesn't this flick get the respect it deserves? Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear are Siamese Twins who go out to Hollywood so Kinnear can pursue his dream to become an actor.
24
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
The first stoner flick I ever really laughed at.
27
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Washed up actors from a long canceled TV Sci-Fi meet up with real aliens who need the help of their fictional characters.
28
Shaolin Soccer
If you haven't seen Steven Chow's kung fu comedies, this is a great place to start.
32
Liar Liar
The only film to every give a reasonable excuse for Jim Carey acting the way he does.
33
Free Enterprise
If you read comic books, go to science fiction conventions, or think $300 is a fair price for a Boba Fett figure then you are bound to recognize yourself in this hilarious movie in which Wlliam Sahtner wants to do an operatic version of Hamlet.
34
Intolerable Cruelty (Widescreen Edition) (2003)
If Cary Grant were in his forties today he would be making this movie with the Coens. Instead we get George Clooney, and that ain't bad.
35
Young Einstein
Yahoo Serious, are you kidding? Nope, I'm serious.

Man Bites Dog is a Belgian film, not French. We don't have too many films to be proud of, so don't take the few we have away from us ;) Greetings from a Belgian.

Thanks for the correction! I wouldn't want to deprive Belgium of the credit for this great flick!

I LOVE the list and agree with all of it, but I gotta say Hollywood Shuffle, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!, Galaxy Quest, Hot Fuzz, and Kung Fu Hustle are some of the best films ever made. But the same can be said for everything on this list.

I have a part two for comedies that deals with older films that I'm updating. Then of course there's a separate list for horror comedies.

I am the poster child for inertia. Where ever I am is where I plan to stay FOREVER.   So much so in fact that it took me decades to understand the punchline about why   the chicken … more
