My Favorite Zombie Films

  • Aug 19, 2009
What can I say except, the list is in somewhat of an order of preference, but I wouldn't take that term too loosely because it's difficult for me to campare apples and oranges and that's the way I look at films. And now --Dinner is served!
1
Night of the Living Dead
The one, the only, ask for it by name, accept no up-dated color version, folks, because Romero got it right the first time!
2
Fido
Maybe the Canadians are the only people who could have come up with this delightful flick billed as "the feel good zombie movie of the year". If we waited for Hollywood to come up with something this original we'd all live forever.
3
Cemetery Man
The caretaker at an Italian cemetery has his hands full becuase the dead just won't stay buried. But it's far from a simple film. Funny, gross, complicated, it's got everything.
4
Re-Animator
Leave it to Stuart Gordon and the inimitable Jeffrey Combs to bring a modern version of Lovecraft to the screen and make it work in a way that would have stunned HPL.
5
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
What can you say about a classic except that it leaves you expecting more of the same from its creator.
6
Dawn of the Dead poster
Running zombies my ass! I'm sticking with Romero. Can't young film makers get original ideas of their own instead of remaking things that don't need to be remade?!
8
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
I can't help it, I just like my horror comedies and this film worked on both levels.
9
Night of the Creeps
A loving tribute to horror films about a serial killer who is killed and then cryogenically frozen only to be accidentally thawed out a couple of decades later by 2 frat boys. Did I mention the alien parasites. Not a typical zombie movie, but funny and thuroughly entertaining. And FINALLY available on DVD!!
10
Zombieland (2009)
Say what you will detractors, I dug this one and I'm looking forward to the seqel.
See the full review, "Zombie Heaven".
11
Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things
Filmed in Florida this horror comedy is dear to my heart.
See the full review, "Gather around children, Uncle Alan is going to curdle your blood.".
12
Return of the Living Dead 2
More of a farce that its predecessor, this sequel still had enough oomph in it to make my list.
13
Dead Alive (Unrated) (Sp) (1993)
Words fail me whenever I try to describe this film, so if you haven't seen it, be warned --it's earned its reputation for being bloody and gross and absolutely hilarious.
See the full review, "The Goriest Zombie Comedy Ever Made?".

Movie poster
I spent a good 15 years hating this film, the 3rd installment in Romero's series. But eventually I eased up and went with what he was trying to say. Now I can appreciate it for what it is rather than hate it because it isn't what I wanted it to be.
15
A low budget film from England, and one of the first to be released in the U.S. by Fangoria, this little goodie tells the story of a victim of a zombie attack and his slow, inevitable descent into flesh gnoshing monsterhood.
16
Movie poster
Very, very loosely based on the book of the same name about a doctor searching the Amazonian rain forests for plants that have medicial uses. It all turns into a Haitian zombie nightmare at the hands of Wes Craven.
17
Bio-Zombie
Zombies in a Chinese shopping mall. See it to believe it.
18
Kung Fu Zombie
I love Billy Chong, Kung fu movies, and horror comedies--and that's what this is, all of the above.
19
movie poster
Another entry in the new redneck horror genre, and more zombieism caused by alien parasites. For you guys there is the prerequisite topless, lesbian stripper scene.
20
Undead
A lot of people hated this because they wanted it to be just another formulaic zombie flick which it definitely was not. I sure didn't see what was coming!
21
Dead Snow
Who doesn't enjoy the sight of Nazi zombies frolicking, and just plain licking, in the Swedish snow?
23
Bride of Re-Animator
While not as good as the original it was still good to see Combs back in action as Herbert West, N.U.T.

What did you think of this list?

I am the poster child for inertia. Where ever I am is where I plan to stay FOREVER.   So much so in fact that it took me decades to understand the punchline about why   the chicken … more
