dear ariajuliet, I use macs. but am not an expert. I asked my mac guru, bernard carman of asheville, nc to comment. Here is what he asked me to tell you "i personally like the Fantom external hard drives. i would advise purchasing the version which has both USB and Firewire: See http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822207009&cm_re=fantom-_-22-207-009-_-Product>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822207009&cm_re=fantom-_-22-207-009-_-Product Time Machine is available on all Mac OS systems for the past couple of years (at least). i would simply upgrade your MacBook Pro to OS X.5 or newer." Cordially, qigongbear/Patrick K

I recently purchased a Western Digital WD Elements 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External from Amazon for about 60 bucks. I used time machine to back up all my stuff and the harddrive is small enough for me to carry around in my backpack. The Time Capsule looks really cool and seems really convenient but I'm happy with my purchase and the amount that I spent =P
