You like silent slapstick?

I've enjoyed what I've seen and I'll be the first to admit, that is quite limited. I'm going to have to dig in your community for some good recommendations!

I've got a box set of early Chaplin short films, but I've yet to invest in any of the movies. While I love silent films, silent comedies aren't my favorite, though I like both Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

What would you suggest I start with?

For comedies or just silent films in general?

Silent films in general, since I'm a newbie, I could use some suggestions!

Well, like with all films there are a lot of genres to choose from. I find that, for me anyway, the comedies and melodramas are a little tricky for newcomers since the acting style is so different from what you normally see in modern films. I often recommend the foreign silent films, which tend to be more character and plot driven. Anything by Murnau, Pabst, or Lang is pretty much a guarantee of quality. Tod Browning did some wonderful films too. If you're more likely to choose films based on actors though, I'd recommend you check out any films starring Lon Chaney, Sr., Louise Brooks, and Clara Bow. You might also enjoy the early Douglas Fairbanks films which are very light and fun adventure films.

Nice, Sean! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to go find some now!

If you use the sort option when looking through my reviews, you'll be able to see what DVDs I recommend.

Will do! Thanks so much, Sean!

Rudolph Valentino. He's so camp. He was even camp back in his own day.
