The Avengers
animated series had impressed me a great deal, and as a result, I come into each batch of episodes with higher expectations. The first three volumes were good, very good, and quite honestly, I think they were very tough to follow and it kind of shows in this fourth volume. Now don't get me wrong, these are still some really good episodes as the writers continue to stick with what works; great action, nice animation, solid storytelling, and the preparation for future story-lines while wrapping up existing ones.

This volume follows the team as they battle one serious threat after the other. The first episode has a good mix of action and very well placed comedy. However, it's mainly meant to set up another future story element concerning Thor's evil half brother Loki. Things become better when the mad robot Ultron finally makes his goal known to wipe out mankind in a two part story arc called Ultron-5 and The Ultron Imperative. These two episodes feature more of those awesome, intense action segments that rank about as high as the battles with Graviton, Kang, and Leader. Ultron is indeed built up as a serious threat, as he takes severe punishment from both Hulk and Thor, and continue on dishing out his own powerful offense. These episodes also continue to develop the characters through various situations, and Iron Man and Thor clash with one another through a verbal debate on the hazards of technology and magic which is quite funny.

The Avengers also tackle Hydra once again, and this season ends with a fierce battle against Loki. I enjoyed these episodes overall, but I can imagine some not enjoying these as much as the previous episodes if serious action is what they're all about. I enjoyed the character interactions, story build up, and cameos from both the Marvel heroes and villains line up; however, this volume just isn't on the same level as everything before it. For the followers of the comic, there are some goodies found here through fan service paying homage to certain elements such as Hawkeye's west coast reference.

The animation is still very good delivering some nice fast paced action. There's plenty of fisticuffs and light shows here. Despite one obvious animation error, there really isn't anything to complain about. The character designs are still faithful to the comic for the most part, but I do not remember Ulik being so huge. The voice acting is still a plus; Eric Loomis (Iron Man) and Rick D. Wasserman (Thor) were enjoying their roles, Graham McTavish as Loki is always something to hear, and Tom Kane was very good with Ultron's robotic personality.

Avengers Volume 4 is a solid addition to the line up and it ends rather well. I really want to see what goes down in the second season, and I hope the wait isn't too long. Overall, if you enjoyed the first three volumes then you'll enjoy this too. If you're unfamiliar with the Avengers animated series, then I recommend it if you're a fan of action and comics, or if you enjoyed either Justice League or the X-Men series. This volume collects episodes 20 - 26 and has a 148 minute run time.

Pros:
-Character interactions, action, voice performances

Cons:
-Not exactly on the same level as the earlier volumes

One of the best series out there for sure, love how they actually make it work. I thought great comic animated series were gone.

DC and Marvel have been doing a great job with the comic to animated series. It always makes me wonder why they don't do these things often with all thier heroes.

I bought volumes 3 and 4 last Tuesday, so I'll be watching a bunch of these titles. I saw a few episodes on TV before and I was real impressed how it manages to keep a good tone that matches the comic books. I heard awesome things about the Graviton arc and that Ultron Imperative was supposed to push the limits of the series. The action and the story may be on par with JLU, I just wished they released this as a complete set rather than doing the per volume thing as it gets more pricey. I'll join you in these topics after I watch all volumes on my three day weekend coming...

Man, the Graviton arc is bad ass. I was taken by complete surprise with that one. The battles with Kang and Ultron are awesome too. This series is just too good, and I really advise to start at the very beginning.

I plan on doing a few asian movie reviews and then I am going to take this on. This is on Disney XD right? I need to upgrade my service for season 2, expanded basic isn't enough anymore....I am holding off on YOUNG JUSTICE until they release the collection though, since 3 episodes per disc is silly....
