A 2001 horror-mystery film directed by the Hughes Brothers and loosely based upon the graphic novel of the same name.
< read all 7 reviews Saw this one at the buck fifty palace and it was worth every penny. I tried to catch it earlier at the regular theater and would have paid full price ticket but couldn't juggle my schedule.
Nothing new on the case of the world famous "Ripper" murders but the film was a very good adaptation focusing on the juxtapositions of prostitues or "unfortunates" and genteel society.
Johnny Depp plays junky detective who delves into the mystery of the Ripper! Depp plays his part to perfection dashing about decadent Victorian London in a smart top hat and smoking away in Chinese Opium dens.
The prostitues are portrayed as working class women just trying to get ahead in the world and shows them in a sympathetic light.
The Ripper is portrayed in terms of the evil racist establishement authority or in today's terms "the man".
The weakest link in the film was it's modern take and values on race and sex and imprinting it on 19th century characters.
An overall good movie and I would recommend it to those who don't have a queasy stomach. Some of the death scenes are extreme!
