A Dynamite, Fast Paced Session w/ Peter Shankman

  • Mar 14, 2010
We were mid-lunch on 6th St. when someone asked if we were planning on hitting any of the 12:30 sessions.  It would have been easy to say no, but we decided to hurry up and hustle down to the Hilton for Peter Shankman's session.

I'm glad we did because it turned out to be one of the best decisions that I made all week.

His frenetically paced presentation was full of great takeaways that tied together a lot of loose ends that have been floating around in my head. Not only did I enjoy the session, but I also live tweeted the session and lots of others did as well.

The only downside was learning that he organzied a mini-skydiving meetup.  I wish I would've known about that.  It's been on my list of things to do for a while now.  ::Note to self, ping @skydiver next year and ask if there's another #sxskydive planned::

I've curated my live tweet stream for you all below. Enjoy!

Why Self-Promotion Will Save the World

When self promotion is done right. It's helping&giving people something to talk about. It's about being 'that guy'

Who is 'that guy'? He's the one who's emails you read, never wastes your time, always has the answer.

You never hesitate to recommend because he's the one who makes you look good.

Radio was Pandora before the internet. /via @skydiver

Four quick rules on self promotion: Transparency, Relevance, Brevity, Top of Mind Presence.

We have thousands of people in our networks and we only talk to 1or2 a day & that's BS.Call your network & say hi.

We love to be finders & people love finders because secretly, they want to be finders too. #sxsw

If there was a dislike button on FB, it would be a great lesson for 88% of the people out there.

There's no reason not to do this. But thousands of reasons TO do this including $ & :)

Limit the number of things you post, say, type or tweet that start with the word "I"

Find the hidden value in what you love. If you don't believe in what you do, don't bother promoting it, end of story.

If perceived value is greater than perceived self promotion, everyone wins.

http://iwearyourshirt.com/ getting a shout out.

Be thankful! Thanking people is underrated & can leapfrog you from someone to 'that guy' in 140 characters.

Everything you post, say, tweet, promote, friend, buzz, wave, foursquare, plancast, or share increases or decreases your personal brand.

Only you can control whether you're a self promoting douchebag or someone offering good stuff that people want.

Fun is contagious & so is smiling... but so is being a downer. Don't be a downer.

Rousing applause for @skydiver. One of the best sessions of #sxsw2010 so far! Check out his project. http://helpareporter.com/

If there was a dislike button, it would be helpful. Though getting ignored long enough should do the trick.

Interesting topic and fantastic take-aways! So many of these I completely agree with including, "If you don't believe in what you do, don't bother promoting it." Thanks for sharing this! And I hope you catch the skydiving meetup next time. Always a great rush of adrenaline:)
