The many, many films of Chang Cheh

Chang Cheh was a very versatile and prolific filmmaker who directed the majority of his films for The Shaw Brothers.  He directed every kind of action film imaginable from period pieces to modern day.  During his most active phase of his career, he used the talents of Ti Lung, David Chiang, Alexander Fu Sheng and Chen Kuan Ti and his screenplay writer Ni Kuang.  His bloody films usually ending on a nihilistic tone with no winners but losers and survivors.  Chang also relied heavily on assistant directors and "action" directors (directors who are in charge of the action set pieces) a few of them would become popular directors themselves such as John Woo, Wu Ma, Danny Lee, Yuen Woo Ping and Lau Ka Leung.
In his declining years, Chang Cheh's bills piled up and was in ill health.  But his old colleagues came back together and made a "benefit" film for their old master.  It was an interesting one called Just Heroes featuring a lot of former and future stars of the industry. Even though he has passed on, his ultraviolent and gritty style of filmmaking will live on.
