The Coolest Count Dracula to ever wear the cape.

Christopher Lee is one of my favorite actors and the best actor to ever play the role of the evil Count Dracula. Mr. Lee first wore the cape in the Hammer Films remake of Dracula a.ka. Horror of Dracula. He would return to the role several more times in Hammer sequels Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Scars of Dracula, Dracula 1972, and The Satanic Rites of Dracula. His nemesis in most of those films was Peter Cushing. Cushing was another Hammer Films player who would appear in many of Christopher Lee's films. Often, he would play Dr. Van Helsing or one of his descendants (Peter Cushing would forever be remembered for his role in Star Wars as the man who controlled Darth Vader). Lee was so charismatic as Count Dracula that he wouldn't even need dialog (as in Dracula, Prince of Darkness). His icy stare and all around badditude was enough to carry a film.

During the late seventies, Lee grew tired of playing Dracula (he's one of the actors who's played the part so many times during the sixties and seventies that he was soon to be identified with the role). Not wanting to fall prey to the same misfortunes as Bela Lugosi, Mr. Lee took other parts and even refused to play Dracula in Hammer's last horror film (the odd collaboration between Hammer and Shaw Brothers Studios picture The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires). Years later whilst in semi-retirement Hollywood director Tim Burton (a big fan of Hammer horror films) wanted to work with the legendary Christopher Lee as he did with Vincent Price. Lee's career took a mainstream turn and he would appear in such films as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the last two Star Wars films.

Well into his eighties, Christopher Lee still continues to act. Despite his roles as the diabolical Fu Manchu, Sauron or Lord Dooku. He'll always be remembered as the coolest Dracula in cinema history. People want to talk about Bela Lugosi or Gary Oldman as being the best Dracula. Check out Lee's work in the Hammer films and you'll see why there is no other,

Queen B pointed it out already but you did leave out the James Bond movie Man With the Golden Gun. Lee was the best thing of that movie and more then likely Attack of the Clones which are each weak movies in their respective francises. Any movie that might be in danger of being terrible better hire Mr. Lee so that their movies not be complete garbage. Great review.

Great review. Christopher is certainly "the man."

The Man with the Golden Gun was a pretty sweet Bond movie, though I'd say Christopher Lee played a better Dracula than he did a James Bond. I wonder how Sean Connery would do in the scenario of the interchangeable secret agent/vampire challenge?

I was one of those Christopher Lee fans who wound up naming there kid for him, only I had a girl and my soon-to-be-ex wanted the name to start with a "K" like mine so she became Kristine Lea. We actually pronounce it Leah though, I gave her the option of how she wanted to pronounce it. Lee also did that Bond movie, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, remember that one? And what was the one where he sang?  THE RETURN OF CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE.  My favorite Lee fim though is probably THE DEVIL RIDES OUT/THE DEVIL'S BRIDE. I'd always hoped they'd make another movie out one of Wheately's books about that crowd.
