Dario Argento is one of my favorite directors.  His films Bird With the Crystal Plummage, Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebre and Inferno are some of the genre's best.  Some may criticize his style over substance way of filmmaking, but I'm not one of them.  I really enjoy Argento's use of color and lighting. His audio and visual assault on the senses add to his tight directorial style that walks the fine razor edge of tension.  Sadly, his latest films lack the flair and grittiness of his earlier work.  I highly recommend watching his films in Italian with English subtitles (if you can) because he has a knack for dialog that somehow gets lost in the bad English dubbing.

If I had to pick his best film I would have to say it's Suspiria.  An incredible horror film that's filled with bright colors, quick editing, loud music and brutal gore.  The story is very interesting and since it was filmed in English you don't miss anything from the original plot line.  Dario Argento likes to play the killer in his films and he "kills" the victims of his pictures off screen.  You'll see his black leather gloved hands holding the murder weapon.  When he started out making films, Argento made several giallos (named after the yellow Italian pulp novels).  His first film The Bird With the Crystal Plummage was a big hit, he followed it up with two more films from the "animal trilogy" (Cat O' Nine Tails and Four Flies on Grey Velvet).  Besides Suspiria, he also directed Inferno and The Mother of Tears to complete the Three Sisters trilogy (based upon three evil witches).  Amongst his other films are a remake of Phantom of the Opera, Tenebre, Trauma and Phenomena.

A true master of horror if there ever was one.  He was a protege of the king of Italian terror films Mario Bava (Bava's son Lamberto is also a filmmaker who has worked in the past with Argento) and has learned a lot from his films.  Like I said, his newer films are not that great but they're a lot better than most of the horror filmmakers out there today.  If you want to see some real good horror films then check out Dario Argento's back catalog.  You wont be disappointed.
