Nicknamed the "Hick from French Lick", Larry Bird was born on December 7, 1956, in West Baden, Indiana. His nickname resulted from the fact that he grew up in both West Baden and nearby French Lick. His family was poor throughout his childhood, and the little Larry spent considerable time living with his grandmother: so as lighten the economic pressure on his parents.
