The idea behind Sandra Lee's show is awesome. Semi-homemade is the perfect kind of cooking for those of us who want to be Martha Stewarts but live in a Rachel Ray world. Plus, her Great American Story is kind of inspiring.
Here's the thing: she's annoying as all get out. Her voice, the sing-songy way she talks about the theme-o-the-day. The way she changes the kitchen colors and even her outfit to match said theme. It's all annoying. I especially hate it when she goes with some ethnic food theme and shows her complete misunderstanding of the culture in a slightly racist way. (Note to Sandra: wearing red and putting chopsticks in your hair does not mean you're dressing Chinese.)
And hey, I'm a drinker, but even I find the obssesion with having a themed-alcoholic drink for EVERY meal she prepares a little sad. Maybe it's the vision of Martha getting plastered in her gardening shed that it brings to mind. I dunno.
Ultimately, I think I'd love her cookbooks but I simply can't stand to watch her be Miss Prissy-Priss Closet Drunk. I want to scream at her to go to therapy.
I leave you with this... a whole lotta work for a store bought cake to look as ugly as possible:

Yeah, I think Sandra Lee is more deserving of Anthony Bourdain's haterade than Rachel Ray.
I happen to like to watch her kitchen makeovers more than her actaul cooking. Maybe I appreciate the DIY decor ideas and tablescapes more than the onion soup packet roast seasoning tips. Overall though, I agree that her cookbooks are ideal for the busy chef.
While I agree with you about Sandra Lee's show and her voice and the way she changes that kitchen to match the theme and how annoying it all is, I have to recommend a cookbook of hers for those that are super busy but still want a "home-cooked" meal. I have a new son and as such, am really busy. However, I still like to have something whipped up that tastes good for my husband and I at dinnertime. My mom passed along one of Sandra's slow cooker cookbooks and while it's not gourmet, it's good food that doesn't take a ton of time to prep. If you can get past her show and maybe just look at some of the recipes, you may be pleasantly surprised....or not. And that's cool, too. :-)
Totally agree. If I watch the Food Network it is because i want to be inspired to cook something that stretches my ability. It seems they have fewer talented chefs and more "personalities" that cook unimpressive food.
Can I please agree with you more? Nope, don't think I can. Everything you said is spot on. This woman annoys the cr@p out of me. It really amazes me that she hasn't been canceled yet. Or been replaced. It's not the show's fault she's such a terrible host.
I couldn't agree with you more on this one! She is a pretty annoying host and doesn't seem to be a very talented chef either -- not a good combination for a Food Network star!
