Jethro Tull is certainly a very creative band. And Aqualung has some captivating moments. Locomotive Breath with its classical intro and driving guitar riffs is a definite highlight. Mother Goose is a pleasant acoustic ditty. And the first recording of Wind Up is certainly a hidden gem. I love the shifts in volume and tone on this one. Hymn 43, Up To Me, and My God have some captivating touches.

However, the excessive religious theme is a bit much over the course of an album. Whereas I like the basic riff in Aqualung, the lyrics just irritate me. "Snot running down his nose"...yeeech! Some of the lyrics in Cross Eyed Mary are not actually appealing either. The interview does not present this record well and is way too long. Why in the wrold is it even on here. The extra tracks add very little and the other acoustic ditties lack a decent melody in spite of being basically pleasant on the ear.

Tull fans will probably lambaste me but this CD is not as reverred as others may think it is. Ian Anderson is a good vocalist and flute player and Martin Barre and the the keyboard player(John Evans??) make some strong contributions. However, the casual fan of these guys is best off picking up a compilation.
