One of the Best Recordings of the Nineties

  • Jan 29, 2000
I am not the biggest fan of nineties music. Most of it is either too grungy or overly synthesized for my tastes. However, this record does stand out from the pack because it was recorded and written from the heart and mind as opposed to placating the tone deaf hip hop enthusiasts. This recording starts off quite strong with four excellent songs with variating styles. Mr. Jones just flat out rocks while Omaha is cute in a hickish kind of way. Round Here and Perfect Blue Buildings are two beautiful ballads that deal with poignant moments life hands us. The next two songs are just Ok as they do drag in spots. Rain King is just what is needed at this point; a fast rocker with some good vocal harmonies. The remaining songs have good moments but drag in too many spots to be fully enjoyable. But as many other reviewers have commented, one can clearly feel the emotion in all these songs. Whereas this is not one of my all time favorite records in my collection, I do appreciate the vocals, lyrics, arrangements, and overall effort in the making of this disc. I definitely believe it is among the top twenty or even ten releases of the nineties and it belongs in most record collections. Whereas, I would never rank it as the number 65 recording of the millenium, I respect the general consensus here as it is very representative of what nineties music should have been.
