Average Remixes to Otherwise Great Songs

  • Dec 15, 2008
As a fan of Maroon 5, I was interested in hearing how "Call and Response" came out. After listening to the CD from start to finish, I have to say as a whole this 'remix album' was a let down. Maroon 5's strength is their lyrics and the original rock/pop vibe the group pulls off on many songs. The problem with many of these remixes is that they are rather flat and sound uninspired. Many of the remixes, such as "If I Never See Your Face Again feat. Swizz Beatz" simply sounds as if someone took the a cappella of the original song, stuck a rather average run-of-the-mill hip-hop beat to it and didn't bother to do much more with the song. I found some of the remixes to be outright annoying - you're listening to a track like "Harder to Breathe feat. The Cook Kids" and the main 'remixed' element is an intrusive, bad rap that clashes with the rest of the song.

There are a few exceptions to the mediocre tracks. The remix of "Little of Your Time" by Bloodshy and Avant that not only plays with the beat but tweaks to the vocals is everything a true remix should be -- it's uninspired, fun, gets you moving and keeps you interested. "This Love" remix by Cut Copy is another great example of what the other tracks should have been. Here, the rock track is stripped down and turned into a house/trance remix that you can easily see being played out in a club. The Oakenfold mix to "If I Never See Your Face Again" is another good, well-produced and mixed track.

In all, many of these remixes suffer from sound a bit amateurish and few stand out as something worth purchasing. I didn't like how on many of the tracks the vocals and instrumentals simply sounded thrown together, or how some of the remixers felt inserting a rap line by them made the song a good mix. It doesn't live up to the original and doesn't take the song into new territory. Most of the release, even with being a remix album, is rather tame and boring. Save your money on this purchase.
