If You Can Only Buy One Song Make It: Feel

Chicago is one of those bands that have been around forever.  They are also one of the few bands where the order of their discography is hardly in question.  Starting with their second album Chicago has since numbered all their albums, and only a few times have they added a subtitle to that number.  "Chicago XXV: The Christmas Album" is their 25th studio album and, as you might have guessed, is their turn at doing Christmas music.  Now, most of the time Christmas albums are made for one simple reason: Because contractually a band is required to make one.

It makes sense to require this from most bands you sign because a Christmas album has market potential at least once a year, and these albums will usually sell more copies then most of their studio releases (just ask Clay Aiken).  But twenty-five albums later Chicago finally makes one?  Clearly they weren't under contractual obligations, so did they do this because they felt they could make a great Christmas album?  I don't know, but the bottom line is they certainly do deliver.  It's filled with mostly old favorites, but with Chicago's distinct rock sound applied to them.

The only original tracks are "Child's Prayer" and "One Little Candle," two songs that would make great radio hits.  It's difficult to say why this Christmas album sticks out from many of the others out there, but Chicago has that special "sound" that makes it difficult to pass this album up once you start listening to it.  The only downside to the album is the band's performance of "Felix Navidad," but then most people don't nail that song, so I didn't expect them to.  While I know it's a good chance you already have all these songs in some form, I can easily recommend it for it's unique take on the classics.
