An album by Depeche Mode

One of Depeche Mode's greatest strengths is also their greatest weakness. The band comes up with some of pop music's most inventive lyrics, and at the same time, they always give the impression that they'll arbitrarily sing about anything, … see full wiki

Dark, not Depressing

  • May 19, 2001
I suppose the best way to describe this cd is to describe Depeche Mode themselves. I have been a fan for about 10 years and I have noticed that people either love them or hate them. That is one thing that I really like about them, because I feel that will keep them going strong.

As far as the cd, I will admit it is a bit different then some of their earlier stuff. When I first listened to it, I wasn't sure what to think, after Ultra, which was a bit harder, Exciter seems like it could be a let down. But after the second listen songs started making sense and I knew that I was with Andy, Martin and David. It just seems that this album has a theme, which is love, now of course 80% of their music is about love, but this seems a bit more positive. It makes me feel really good. Now the music is still dark and bizarre, but that is the Depeche Mode way. I can understand if someone that isn't in touch with that side of them wouldn't like this cd. There are a couple faster songs, "Dream On", "I Feel Loved" and "The Dead of Night", which plays like "Barrel of a Gun" Part 2. The one song that is playing over and over again in my head is "Freelove" it is one of the slower songs, but it is such a pretty song. David's vocals are awesome, and it has that vintage DM sound to it.

I can say that I pretty much grew up with Depeche Mode and their songs have been a good escape for me. I am not saying that I would play "Music for the Masses" to solve my problems, but I think other fans of DM know what I mean. They truly are a great band, and this album shows it. Yes it is slower, but hey they are getting better with age. I do miss some of there faster tunes, but these songs take you to a good place.

I went to see them on their "Singles Tour" and they were lager than life. So just keep an open mind. It might be dark, but it isn't depressing, it is pure Depeche Mode.
