Every girl should get this album when they turn 14

I'm not one to wax nostalgic about pop culture, but it isn't exaggerating to say this album changed my life.  The raw and honest quality of Liz Phair's lyrics and vocals, in conjunction with her unabashed sexuality was something that I had never before experienced in popular music and it really changed my view of the power of art - even popular art - to touch people and move them.

In 2008, the album was re-released and Phair went on tour, playing the album live, in order.  I had the pleasure of attending one of these shows (the first scalped ticket I have ever bought) and it was amazing.  I went alone, stood near the stage and cried more than once.  Arguably, Phair has never managed to top this, her first album, but many artists never make something so big and so meaningful to so many people in their entire careers.

I highly recommend Exile in Guyville for all angsty teen girls...or anyone who just remembers being one.

I friggin' love this album, though I heard it first in college, right after some traumatic breakup! What I love about this album is how it just sounds like Liz is in her bedroom, playing a couple of acoustic songs. It's very intimate, small, and it makes me well up with nostalgia every time I hear it.
