In their biography 'The Unforgettable Fire' it is stated that Bono, before creating U2's 'Sgt. Pepper' lost the luggage that contained the lyrics to their next work. 'October' was their next work. 'October' has the advantage of spontaneity, but also at the expense of some spotty, tentative moments on this their second album. While there are off-the-cuff deliveries on the C.D., there are moments of brilliance as well. The shimmering quality of some of their music here make it essential for U2 fans. …

I feel that this album is the by far the best older U2 record, between "Boy", "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire". Mainly because of the diversity of songs, some fast, some slow, some loud and some soft. It is beautiful how they use the piano and how Bono's voice melts in with the music. Now I love the new stuff and have been a U2 fan for 10 years, but when critics and fans say they miss the older stuff this is the record they are talking about. A must have.
