If Peter Gabriel were a lesser talent, I would have never endured Scratch My Back all the way through until I lost count at approximately twenty times or so. For the life of me it is impossible to see the point of transforming and reinterpreting a uniformly brilliant sampling of Gabriel's favorite artists into well over an hour of somnolent mush.
It could be that I'm out of synch with the "artiste" and I just don't get it - but with the exception of Paul Simon's Boy in the Bubble every song involved could be syndicated for elevator duty or run on endless loop during an 800-number customer-service interstitial. It's so sad when bad things happen to great music.
An easy pass.
