If you thought the world was crazy on Feb 1st a couple of years ago when the Lakers pulled off a trade for Pau Gasol you probably were thinking good trade. Last week when you heard that Ron Artest would be joining the Lakers after they just won their 15th championship you were probably scratching your head wondering why. Why Artest? Isn't he a nutty buddy?? Aren't Artest & Kobe engaged in a blood fued?? Isn't Phil Jackson too old to deal with this drama?? Why didnt the Lakers resign Ariza??

Those are all valid questions. Most of them dont matter. This is what does:

1. Ron Artest is a brilliant player. He is tough. He plays defense. He has the heart to win. All things that will help bolster any championship caliber team let alone the current NBA champs.

2. When was the last time you heard of Ron Beefing with a teammate? Answer: Never.  A coworker pointed this example out to me this morning. How many players in the NBA, or any sport for that manner would follow a teammate into the stands to kick a couple fans teeth in?? I can name a couple & they are both former teammates of Ron's. A coincidence nah. It's simply Ron's theory for the game, "Us against Them". I dont know about the rest of the world but im sure Kobe & co. are happy to be included in the Us category.

3. Anybody remember the last time that a "Problem Child" was traded to a NBA champion?? Outside of Starbury going to the Celts. It was Dennis Rodman twice. Once to the Bulls helping anchor a 72 win season. And another to the Lakers when he was obviously more enamored with acting a fool than playing ball. The good news is that Ron Artest is no Dennis Rodman. The bad news(for the rest of the leauge) is he brings the same presence that Rodman brought to the Bulls.

4. He's hungry. Just like Kobe on the MVPuppets commercial. Ron wants to eat some of that championship cookie. That hunger will definately rub off on a team that has a pattern of sitting on its butt when the chips are up. Ron's hungry, & those chips are his.

This free agent season has had some good moves (Richard Jefferson to the Spurs) and some bad moves(Shaq to the Cavaliers) but the best thus far is Ron Artest moving to L.A.

I agree with you but I think Orlando got stronger too this year. Vince Carter isn't a joke. In fact, I think that was the one piece they were missing. Someone who really wants the ball down the stretch. It'll be interesting how next season plays out. And I totally agree with the Cavs being idiots for getting shaq. Someone way passed his prime. They might as well have signed Bill Russel or Kareem.

Thats true and untrue in the same sense. Vince definitely demands the ball but he isn't a constant threat from the perimeter ala Turkoglu. Cleveland was doing anything to keep fans in the seats for a year or two more. Shaq is supposed to counter Dwight Howard in the paint but Dwight didnt beat the Cavs Rashard Lewis & Turkoglu did.
