Quirky Romance for the Non-Harlequin Romance Reader
Jul 12, 2009
Jennifer Crusie is one of my favorite authors because she creates wonderful, hilarious, quirky stories with characters you really want to root for.
The thing I love best is that Crusie's heroines feel like real women - strong-willed, dimensional, rebellious, imperfect ladies who aren't the self-absorbed, perfect-bodied flowers one grows to expect in the Romance genre. Her heroes are imperfect, too, which makes them that much sexier. And she knows just how to write the witty banter that shows their how their attraction grows.
Another thing Crusie excels at is creating dimensional side-characters. Far from the usual snarky best friend or womanizer wingman, Crusie's side-characters range from a hairdresser trying to spice up her deflating marriage, a radio DJ named Harry The Howler, a nerdy nephew who would rather talk about fish than play baseball, a mob hitman-turned-diner owner, to a seriously depressed basset-hound.
Add in some fun takes on the usual overused romance novel storylines, and Jennifer Crusie makes magic with every book she writes. I've even known guys who've enjoyed her books because they feel more like comedy than romance!
